I am thinking about booking a one way ticket in coach from JFK to HNL and then using miles to upgrade the ticket to first class.

If, when making a dummy booking, there are no first class mileage seats available, does that mean that I would not be able to upgrade an economy ticket with miles?

    Thanks!

I always upgrade at the gate so I never know ahead of time...you may have to call.

Let us know the outcome though!

I just called. So, from what I think is the case: If there are first class seats available for a mileage redemption, you can use the First Class Saver level to upgrade (25k from the mainland). If there are not first class seats available for a mileage booking, but there are first class seats available for a revenue booking, you can use a First Class Flex level to upgrade (50k per person).

Unfortunately on my dates in January there are not Savers available but only Flex.
