Very useful article and well written -- I liked. :)
Wish I had some AS miles to experiment with.

Nice post on this. So you can't mix partner airlines like Quantas and Cathay but can you mix Alaska with those. For example I'm in Kansas City. Can I book a Cathay route out of the West Coast but get the Alaska positioning flight included. I assume not. Keep up the good work.

You can fly Alaska itself and one partner airline, so you should be able to. Alaska flies from Kansas City to Seattle (where there are no Cathay flights), but you could then connect to LA, San Francisco or Vancouver to get on a Cathay flight. Kind of a pain in the neck with the connections, but it should be possible.

Yeah I have quite a few Alaska miles but the connection through Seattle from either MCI or STL aren't such great timing and usually require an overnight connection to get to Hawaii or other places. I wish Alaska has some better early morning flights to the West coast.

Yeah, that's a pain. I sometimes forget how spoiled I am by living near a giant airport like LAX.

    Hi High Class

    Thanks for an informative article.

I'm looking at going the other way, BNE to SFO September 2016.

Qantas don't make Business class available SYD - LAX, but at the moment, AA have Qantas Business class available SYD-SFO, but will there be availability in a couple of months when I can book?

Problem is currently both AS and AA are offering bonus on buying points, I really need to buy them now as availability might be gone when I can next buy bonus points!

Decisions, decisions, which way to go??????????

    Any suggestions?

AS allows CX BNE-HKG-SFO redemptions. AA does not.

    Thanks for that info
Do you know if AS can book Qantas SYD-SFO, same as AA?

Yes. You cannot book until T-330, though, which means other airlines (QF, BA) could snatch up availability QF is hard to come by on AS/AA.

Thanks for this! Trying to get to OZ and never through about going through Asia or stopping over!

And yes daninstl, AS will give you the positioning flight as part of the deal. If you are traveling on a F award, then your travel on AS will be in first. I usually fly-in to the overseas gateway the night before, so I don't miss the flight; AS will let you book the positioning flight within a 24 hour period of your overseas departure. Recently, so not to miss out on a Emirates First Class experience (SEA-DXB), I flew in the night before on AS and stayed at the airport Hilton. Having to sweat an award connection is not fun. Plus you get on your overseas flight well rested. Just tell them at your home town check in counter that you are going to "short check" your bags if you want them for your overnight stay and then re-check them in with the partner airline the next day.
