...so what's going to happen next? The countries that we current exempt will start charging us fees. Just another way for the gov't to collect some extra cash.
A $5.50 border fee proposed for the 2012 budget would net millions for the American coffers, funding security measures.
Ugh, the last thing DHS needs is more money for "security".

This is a proposal for the FY2012 Budget. We're nearly half way through the FY 2011, and there still isn't a budget in place for this fiscal year, so scrutiny hasn't even officially been put forth on this proposal.
Jaded me, however would suggest that it was probably proposed by a House member from a non-border state who will use it for chest puffing and pounding during their 2012 election campaign. Given the impact on border states (particularly the northern border), there's likely to be wide bipartisan support to drop this measure when the Congress of Clows reconvenes after their various recesses.
Besides, what moron would make a fee $5.50 at a border crossing where one goal is to get people through quickly? That's a lot of chage being made. A $5.00 fee would be more feasible operationally.
