While all the details aren't known yet, US Airways is set to announce that they will be adding a unique first class product to their fleet of Regional jets. While the last major to make this move, they appear ready to be the best and as well complete the retrofit of their RJ fleet by years end. Years end? Which year you might say. Actually they are shooting to have the retrofit completed in 2011 which might mean the first major to offer upgrades in every aircraft they fly. For an airline that has had a tough go years back, they certainly are starting to look well-placed in the industry again.

It would be interesting to know what will make their product "unique" compared to the other products offered. Also, legacy continental still does not have F on their regional jets.

This new change will be on all 70+ seat RJs in their fleet meaning that a lot of the East Coast Dividend Miles elite members will be much happier when connecting from the rest of the US Airways system. Number of seats:
    CRJ700 - 9 first class seats
    CRJ900 - 9 first class seats
    EMB170 - 9 first class seats
    EMB175 - 8 first class seats

110 aircraft effected; 640 daily flights and 85 different cities covered by this new upgrade conversion for Dividend Miles members ... unlimited comp upgrades.

Very cool. It will be even better if they add F down to the 50-seaters.

I remember years ago when they first introduced the 170s they said those planes would have F on them, and they changed their mind. It will be nice to see them finally get it.

Now if only they would add closets back on their aircraft... :)

They are including first class on CR7/CR9/E170 and E/175. According to cranky flier they will have 8 F seats on the first three and 9 on the 175.

Are we excluding the scores of DASH-8s that fly under the US Express moniker for any particular reason?

This makes sense, I suppose. Going to look a lot like DL or UA ExPlus.

Certainly will be interesting to see the unique aspect and how that plays into space and comfort.
What would be even better is replacing RJ’s with larger aircraft, however oil prices will keep that far from reality.:(

It should be a great joy to those people flying 3+ hour flights on RJs. :)

Beats a stick in the eye, but other than that...

It would've been nice to see them with a simulated fuselage, too, but I know how that would've played out. ;)

I wonder if the seat pitch in Y on these aircraft will be reduced to help make room??

This also seems like a reversal of the decision made after the US/HP merger to remove F from the west RJ fleet. Oh well, it's welcome just the same.

is it just me or does it look like there might be only 1 inch or so of extra pitch as opposed to coach??? yeah, it's an RJ, but man they look close together. hard to judge

If we use the E-190 as a model, which is the closest thing we have, it will be about 5" in pitch.

less than the 70+ seats. I think one of the real reasons for this is that their RJ fleet is actually somewhat old and in one of those flying fickle finger of fate things, it just so happens that this year was an unusual high count year for refurbs so it was one of those opportune times if ever to do it, do it when the timing is right and since a large majority of these aircraft will be in, it reduces the overall cost vs. bringing them in just for for a seat change. I know that you are much more knowledgeable about this type of topic, your perspective?

DL offers UGs on every 70+ (domestic) aircraft they fly, no?

Not all upgrades were created equal.

I don't understand how this "might mean the first major to offer upgrades in every aircraft they fly."
Don't United and Delta already offer F class on all their larger aircraft?

"US Airways also announced that on April 1 it introduced heartier meals and new snacks to its domestic First Class and brought back glassware on all meal flights...."

"Finally, on May 1, US Airways will launch a series of enhancements to the food and overall meal presentation in Envoy, the airline's business class product to Europe, South America and the Middle East. The redesigned menu will feature a signature six ounce American-style filet plus three other entrée choices, one of which is always a vegetarian dish. Appetizers, desserts and arrival snacks will also be refreshed to provide a restaurant-style experience on board. All of these menu enhancements will be offered on new and modern china that will upgrade the overall meal presentation."

This is a smart decision on US's side. They fly a ton of ERJ 170/175 in the northeast out of PHL and it's a plus to US Airways customers.

While they may be the "last" to the RJ first class race, really the old "CO" hasn't gotten there have they? In the Northeast you get ERJ 145/135 or Q400s primarily, none with first class :(

I recognize that the new UA that changes, but I don't think were going to see the TON of ERJ ExpressJets and Q400s go away anytime soon. :(

Nope there are still several CRJ's out there with no first class.
