i thought it was interesting that it said they would change and be called American Airlines. I always thought the buyer got to keep their name :)

Chemical Bank bought Chase Mahattan Bank and kept the Chase name
North Carolina National bank bought Bank of America and became Bank of America
The list goes on in many industries
AT&T is another, the list goes on and on

American is a more recognized name outside the United States. Makes perfect sense to keep the American name. I would support the merger as long as Parker and Kirby would NOT be running the surviving airline.

Why not? I think that's the only way that most people would support the merger. AA's management has been inept for a decade, whereas US's management has taken two airlines (HP and US) on the edge of liquidation and despite several key disadvantages compared to the other network carriers, created a profitable operation.

I wish they would get it done so I could book travel on AA instead of UA to receive US credit when traveling somewhere US doesn't go or is cheaper with someone else. I know this is a long ways off. Just wishful thinking I guess.

Because I have had personal dealings with them (Parker in particular) and it is my opinion that they are not men of their word, and the team in Tempe is less than honest overall. Without getting deeper into it here, their profits are paper profits, and under more "normal" circumstances the company would be less profitable if not showing a loss.

I will be happy to expound in another forum, or talk to you Thursday if you're going to the Freddies (I will be shooting again).

If US's pay rates were increased to industry standard, they would not be a profitable operation. Doug Parker has very directly stated that US could not survive if they paid industry-standard wages. To me, that does not inspire much confidence in his ability to "successfully" merge US with AA.
