I flew on Monday from CLT to MIA. Soon after taxi began there was a loud bang following which the captain came out and apologized to an FA. He then announced they had inadvertently deployed the emergency slide. In the end we were transferred to another aicraft and the flight was without further incident.

everal other passngers and I agreed that was the first time we'd ever enountered anything like that. Has anybody else had an incident like this one?

Anyone else think there have just been an abnormal number of airplane issues lately. Sheesh
unsure why the pilot apologized, do they control the slide from the cockpit somehow?

Luckily even on the 737-400 there was a safety override for the landing gear.

Yes, deployment can be manually done from the cockpit. they did it! BTW, far better this one than the AF/DL wing clip at JFK!

This pilot will make a trip to the chief pilot's office and stand on the carpet for a heart to heart conversation. ;)

He was so summonded; he and the copilot were discussing that between temselves as we were deplaning. The flight crew changed with the second flight, while the cabin crew continued.

I think it's reporting that has gone up, and that's a function of technology. Back in the day something like this might go unreported because nobody cared to read it off page 5 on the local newspaper. Nowadays there's a cat walking the runway at LGA and within 5 seconds there's a video stream of it online in realtime.

Without a doubt there are many more issues with very old aircraft. The industry still has maintained very good overall safety records but IMHO the combination of antedeluvian ATC, ancient aircraft and growing traffic will bring larger problems.

Even so, things such as this one don't justify regulatrory reporting and often don't make the news even now, nor, IMO, should they. After all it was not a safety of flight issue, but rather inconvenience and cost.

The other thing that really impacts how news is reported and what information we have available to us is the fact that most of the population is carrying around cameras and video recorders in their phones.

Accidentally, no. Deliberately? Well.....I'm sure that if Tommy777 sees this thread he can provide a few pointers on how to unexpectedly deploy an emergency slide on a 737. :D

Exactly. They have to test these things and make sure that the manual deployment feature still works. :D

ASAP will avoid FAA action against the pilot(s) but it will not help at all against actions by the carrier. It will be quite interesting to see if there is any more information forthcoming about this event. Interestingly it seems not to meet the standards for reporting of incident or accident, nor any other neat category, so the FAA may not really be interested.

Wow, that really has me scratching my head. Unless there was some mod done in the past few years, the slides can only be deployed by physically opening the door right there. Arming a door consists of latching the girt bar to the receiver in the floor. There's not even an annunciator in the cockpit that shows if slides are armed. Nothing at all like you would find on a more contemporary aircraft.
