I am flying an international award and am being told that I can only have one connection that is less than 24 hrs and adding another one will require another award. This makes no sense to me route is sfo-hkg-bkk-kul and I want to add kul-rep. The routing is like this b/c kul-rep only operates 3 days a week and I can't keep my booked award F over the water if I go a day later. Now I have less than 24 hours bkk-kul, but when I try to add another segment kul-rep being told that even tho it's less than 24 hours need a separate award. Can anyone clarify? Thanks
Doubt that it's the connection that's an issue. AA requires award tickets to follow published routings. I haven't looked but I'm willing to bet that CX (your over water carrier SFO-HKG) does not publish a routing from SFO to REP that allows you to route through BKK and KUL. Or perhaps you've exceeded MPM. If either's the case, yes, two awards are needed.
I actually can't seem to find a CX fare for SFO-REP. If there is no fare filed, then your award is SFO-KUL and then a second award to REP.
Those explanations make sense but the "you can't have 2 less than 24 hour connections" didn't. CX doesn't fly to rep, and yes I realize I can buy the segment. I guess my other option would be to fly MH instead of CX (if I can get an award booking) - anyone have data on MH first over the water vs CX?
MH uses a 772 LAX-NRT-KUL which only features J class. To get MH F you'd need the 747 or A380 which you won't get from the US.
