I'll soon be joining the "new american" as a chairmans preferred, so matching EXP. When booking awards do you get upgraded?

No. Only if you use the rewards points first or business cabin.

AA does occasionally offer paid kiosk upgrades to elites on check-in for award travel. I had an award ticket once SFO-MIA-JFK and it offered a paid upgrade on the MIA-JFK portion. Think it was a set price - something around $50 per 500 miles flown. I do a lot of award travel and that was the only time I've ever been offered a paid upgrade on an award ticket, so they seem to be pretty infrequent and probably only come into play after elites on paid fares have been dealt with.

I will second what tom911 has experienced. I wouldn't expect to even be offered an upgrade on award flights but it can happen rarely. I'm guessing on flights where business or first is not full and not enough elite upgrades to fill them. That's just a guess though.
