It is possible that Summer published a photo of the kit in her blog and this seller grabbed the photo from her blog. At least she removed her MP# from the card.

This is in the body of his message, so is this just someone making $100 by enrolling you in a challenge?
Please send me a message include your United MileagePlus Number, name on your card (exactly the same name on your UA MileagePlus card, a photo of UA MileagePlus card would be better) after you made the payment , I will upgrade it to Premier Platinum status for you in the next 3 to 5 business days, the status will be good for next 90 days.

To remain a Premier Platinum member through 2014, you will need to fly 18,000 Premier qualifying miles (PQM) or 22 Premier qualifying segments (PQS) on flights operated by United®, United Express® or Copa within that 90-day timeframe*.
*Please note that qualifying activity for this promotion includes only base PQM/PQS and class-of-service bonus PQM/PQS earned on flights operated by United, United Express or Copa, and credited to your MileagePlus account. Any other bonus PQM/PQS, promotional PQM/PQS, credit card PQM, or PQM/PQS earned on other Star Alliance carriers do not count toward qualification for this promotion.

The upgrade can be requested no late than 7/31/2014 and once it's approved it will be Available For Use Immediately for your 3 month period, you can't choose the effective time. Thanks.
There's no cost for you if you're not approved by UA.

That's basically what it is... I remember one of the bloggers posting something similar about a Hyatt Diamond "status upgrade" that they saw online. My guess is that it's an "enterprising" person that has access to the internal systems of the various companies, either legitimately or not.

As sketchy as it sounds, if it is indeed a valid "sale" and you get status for 90 days, it's not actually all that bad, particularly in the case of Hyatt where you could burn through the suite upgrade certs right up front. And remember that some of these things are not open to Joe Sixpack off the street... United doesn't charge you to enroll, but they require you to be Platinum with Delta / US to enroll in a Platinum challenge with them... if you're just a regular member, they don't even look at you.

My guess is that this is someone who will fake (photoshop) Delta or AA credentials and submit them on your behalf to UA to request the challenge.

Our main man @gleff blogged this morning about this topic with some words of caution: http://viewfromthewing.boardingarea.com/2014/07/09/united-platinum-status-100/

Or a marketing test by UA to determine what the price point should be to "sell" upgrades in status challenges...

Which would be the first time since the merger that UA has listened to its customers.

    Besides the complaints, of course.

Don't you think UA would charge more if they were testing it?

Yeah, super annoying. They also used my Marriott Gold card photo. For sure I took the MP # out, but guess I didn't think to plan for someone using the photo to hawk status. Ugh. Have sent in complaints to eBay and the seller directly about using the image (especially with my name on it), but so far radio silence. Always something, huh?!

I also would think that UA would ask @mommypoints for permission to use her photos!

Variable offers. Maybe they'll test it out at higher levels to see how much they can command for it :)

I would not mind paying for such challenges if the once in 5 years restriction could be waived.
Travel patterns changes frequently and when original plans did not worked out, it is a pity that you can only ask for similar challenges only after 5 years.

Which complaint did you use? Use a DMCA complaint it will get responded too, since that is your picture.

Looking at this its likely the guy knows or is a CSR and can dishout challenges and just collecting cash for it.

certainly more of these 'status upgrades' being posted on eBay recently, selling upgrades to Hilton Honors Gold, Hyatt Diamond status for 90 days, Marriott Platinum status... .what are we going to see next, upgrades to SPG Plat ?

I'm surprised that they haven't tried to sell IC Ambassador Status for $400 YET. ;)
