Can't seem to figure this out - any help appreciated. I have 100,000 miles on both programs. Trying to arrange special trip with granddaughter from St. Louis, Missouri to London. Can plan one year out, dates very flexible. I would like to buy full-fare economy and use miles to upgrade to Business Class, but how? BA fees are crazy, website is worse. AA won't allow an upgrade until after ticket is purchased, and then only if seats are available. Bit of a risk there! Perhaps AA to Newark or NYC, then use BA miles on Aer Lingus to Ireland (avoid BA fees) and somehow get from Ireland to London?

    Long problem - thanks anybody.

You can't upgrade from economy (even full-fare economy) to business class if you're flying on a BA aircraft, as you can only upgrade by one cabin via an award.

On BA, you can't upgrade via an award unless there are available award seats, so it sounds like it's the same as for AA aircraft.

You can't upgrade using Avios on Aer Lingus aircraft. You'd have to get a pure redemption award.

Checking AA mileage awards from STL to LHR - there is now availability for through next April (the furthest out now available) for 50K miles each way (100K miles total) on AA Business/First MileSAAver. Not sure if this is helpful, but that would take care of 1 business class ticket.

And many of us have received 100K miles by taking AAdvantage of the US/AA credit card offers. Good luck!
