    This question may have been asked in the past (if so...I apologize for the duplicate question).

    I am a Premier Platinum (as of 3/3) and am using a Regional Upgrade for an ORD - HNL flight. We are currently "waitlisted" for the upgrade on the flight(s). As all Premier member was put in for the UDU but wanted to increase our chances getting the upgrade so I am going to use our Regional Upgrades (assuming that they clear).

    My question is this.....does a Regional Upgrade used by Premier Platinum member take precidence over a GS or 1k using the UDU or somone else using miles to upgrade? Just curious? I know would probably not get the UDU on those flights anyway...

    Thanks and SAFE travels everyone!

    My understanding is that prior to the UDU window (i.e. more than a week out) the certs take priority. Once inside that window status takes priority.

    Going forward (after the systems merger in March) the certificates will have priority over status with the exception of GS, I believe.

    You can expect to wait. I have an NF upgrade (intl) from Business on a very popular route, using a SWU. Based on what I'm looking it, looks like it will probably get processed day of departure, if not at the gate.

    I know you have answered this a million times, but will certs trump miles used to upgrade? Thanks

    My understanding is that they are at the same level. Others have suggested that might not be the case, but I don't believe it to be true today and I doubt they're going to change the technology to adjust that. There's not much motivation to, really, IMO.

    Three men walk into an airport on March 4th. All three are on the same flight and all three want an upgrade. (a) a IK with a CR1, (b) a 2P with points, and (c) a IK with nothing but a UDU. What is the order of priority? I say a,b,c. No ?

    Assuming none are on fares in the Y/B/M range, I believe that is correct.

    I'm not going to say that's right or wrong but from what I was told... assuming they aren't Y/B/M and want to upgrade on the day of departure the order would be B,A,C because UACO takes Miles + Cash over Instruments without Revenue Incremental.

    Where have you heard that? There is no indication this is the case, either historically nor in what has been published in the program rules going forward.

    There is no need to guess; the rules have been posted: http://mileageplusmergerupdates.com/en/mp/MileagePlusin2012/2012UpgradesOverview

    Upgrade priority.

    Upgrade waitlists will be prioritized by status, fare class and time of request.
    Starting at five days (120 hours) before departure, select flights will also be eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades. The confirmation windows will be:

    Confirmation (as early as)
    Global Services 120 hours
    Premier 1K 96 hours
    Premier Platinum 72 hours
    Premier Gold 48 hours
    Premier Silver Day of departure

    On these flights, our upgrade hierarchy will be:
    • Global Services (all upgrade types)
    • Instant upgrades that weren't confirmed in advance, on select Economy tickets (Y/B or 1K on M fare), sorted by fare class, then status
    • Global Premier Upgrades, Regional Premier Upgrades, and Mileage Upgrade Awards, sorted by status, fare class and date of waitlist
    • All remaining Premier members (CPU), by status, then fare class

    So if it doesn't look like you're going to get a good chance at CPU before you check in, you can apply an instrument or miles and jump ahead of the others waiting for a CPU, and elites below you.

    Interesting.

    I think my head is about to explode. I checked the UA / CO Glossary and I could not find "CPU" is that the same as "UDU"?

    CPU - Complimentary Premier Upgrade (used to be UDU)
    RPU - Regional Premier Upgrade (used to be CR-1)
    GPU - Global Premier Upgrade (used to be SWU)
    Mileage Upgrade Award - same as before

    :)

    In the new program, yes.

    SWU->GPU (Global Premier Upgrade)
    CR1->RPU (Regional Premier Upgrade)
    UDU/EUA->CPU (Complimentary Premier Upgrade)

    Thanks to you both. Can we get a little laminated wallet card made with all of the acronym and abbreviation translations from PMCO and PMUA. Except I don't know anyone with a wallet that big?

    If you look at all the various combinations and possibilities, it will turn out that unless you are a GS, the best way to maximize the chances for an upgrade is to request it early. Y/A and 1K on M fare may get you upgraded right away...For all other UGs, the priority order is status, booking class and time on waitlist. Everything being equal, time on the list trumps all...It is the tie-breaker.

    You're better off paying more than buying early; fare comes before time on the list as a tie-breaker.

    It is the 3rd tiebreaker at best, so while "everything being equal" is accurate, that doesn't make it the place to start if you're looking to increase upgrade odds.

    The provided upgrade priorities and hierarchies are not that difficult to understand, I think. I could explain privately, if you'd like.

    I think I made it pretty clear I understand them. And that fare comes above time added to the list.

    So claiming that the time added is the "best way to maximize the chances for an upgrade" is pretty misleading, if not outright false.
