    Hi everyone,

New here and thought I'd address my question here.

Just got a ticket on Continental. JAX-EWR-HKG-TPE

I'm interested in the EWR-HKG route. I'm Gold and my wife has no status. Does CO allow for complimentary upgrades on flights to HKG? I've been reading threads and see people talking about it, but I'm not too clear.

I have a K ticket, which is low I know. Even if we separated tickets, would there be a chance for me?

    Thanks!

No. You need to use miles/copay.

    P.S. welcome to Milepoint!

They don't allow for complimentary upgrades however there are System Wide Upgrades that 1K Members get for flying over 100,000 a year...You will need to purchase a W fare basis and higher to use these... EWR-HKG is the toughest upgrade in the sCO system.

Your option at this point is Miles + CoPay.

    $600 + 30-35K Miles each direction...

Wow guys that was so fast!!

Thanks so much. Guess we'll stick with the ELR seats on that long flight, but will look into using points + cash for an upgrade.

    Thanks again!!

Can you check what the fare difference is between K and W? Sometimes it might be cheaper to obtain some SWUs and Upfare since CO does not charge $ for Upfaring from K to W?

I searched a sample date and saw the following for JAX-HKG as an example...
$1059 in K and $1598 for W so it's $539 more for W Roundtrip and you'd save Miles and $ if you can find systemwide upgrades from someone on MP/FT via a Trade.

I appreciate the help. After looking, I think we'll just stay with what we have for now, but the info you gave is valuable for next time. Learning a little at a time. :)

Upfaring and using a SWU only makes sense if there is inventory available and the upgrades would clear right away. Otherwise, you are essentially paying upfront to be placed on a waitlist. EWR-HKG (or any flight to/from HKG) are very, very difficult to upgrade due to large numbers of paying C customers. I'm 0 for 3 (0 for 6, if you count segments).

I'm pretty sure we can all agree on "very difficult" which would answer the question about upfaring.

And I'd really be happy if we answered the question before we have another argument about UDUstats as a data source. Pretty please?

EWR-HKG is tough, but quite doable if you avoid Fri/Sat/Sun in both directions.

DIG/R_1K, EWR-TLV is, by far, the most difficult longhaul upgrade in the CO system.

I think that anything that does not have an FC, BC or other premium cabin is tough too.:p:D

    It would certainly be better.

I'm willing to bet that EWR-SFO and vv. is a harder upgrade than EWR-HKG in terms of absolute number of folks getting upgrades on a daily basis, as one example. Not trying to start a contest of any sort, just pointing out that none of us posting here really has sufficient data to be able to make absolute claims like "hardest upgrade in the system" or similar. Especially not on a broad scale.
