    Good afternoon everyone:
Do any of you experienced United Airlines travelers have any suggestions on how to upgrade two award tickets I booked for my and my wife on our first Europe trip to Business/First Class? I used basically all my Mileage Plus miles to book to tickets that depart from PTY and arrive in LHR departingThursday the 6th and returning from CDG to PTY on September the 20th. Basically the only segment of each flight that I want to upgrade are the transatlantic flights IAH-LHR and CDG-IAH. I am a Continental Chase Card member as well, but don't have any special Mileage Plus Status since I don't really fly that much. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated. Being that this is mine and my wife's first trip to Europe, I would love to be able to fly first class without having to put one of my kidneys on Ebay. Thanks and have a fantastic day!

Don't hold your breath, sorry. Everyone would love to ug BUT without status (which I assume you don't have since you say you don't fly much) it is near impossible. Even people with high status aren't having much luck since the merger.
Your best bet is to take things that are likely to make you more comfortable on board - UA doesn't provide much in the way of comfort even in higher classes :(

Unless you're GS, status doesn't help with award upgrades.

Since these are award tickets (and assuming you dont have GS status), your only chance is an operational upgrade (even then, I think folks with status might be bumped up to Business before you). Perhaps, buy up to E+?

I'd concentrate on the fact that you're flying round trip to Europe for free. Honestly, I think an upgrade of an award ticket is a bit much to expect.

GS = Global Services (a revenue-based status with an unpublished benchmark for achieving it). A level above 1K.

Sorry, wasn't thinking and was typing on my phone. If you spend a bazillion a year on United, you may be granted GS status. Occasionally, it's given out for marketing reasons as well.

Still not going to help them with upgrades since they want to upgrade the BF international segments (to LHR and back from CDG).

Does anyone know if UA is offering cash upgrades at check-in for award tickets? If so, I would suspect that's the most likely (and probably costly) option for success.

This is looking pretty bleak I guess. By the way, I don't have the hang of the acronyms yet....what is BF?

I live next door in Costa Rica and travel frequently to and through PTY. Welcome to Milepoint, neighbor!

Someone mentioned the buy-ups possibility, but United doesn't offer those from any Latin American country that I have visited. There are no kiosks. You have to check in with old fashioned human beings.

LarryInNYC may have been a little blunt with his advice, but that's probably a very healthy attitude to take. At the risk of being even more blunt, you aren't going to get an upgrade anywhere along the way. Period. Accept that now and you'll enjoy your trip much more, as the absence of disappointment will help you to enjoy your exciting trip. And while I hope to be proven wrong, I won't be. Economy is your destiny on this run.

DannyPoli - welcome to MP (Milepoint). I'm relatively new too. You'll find people here really helpful and friendly. Got stupid questions - ask away :)

Unless you're able to pony up the miles and the space is available, yes.

On my recent award flights, no buy-up was even possible, and I have (the lowest tier of) status.

Personally, I find it difficult to reconcile "bleak" and "flying to Paris".

For acronyms, try selecting the text of the acronym and the definition should appear in the upper-left-hand corner of the screen. Not everything is defined, but a lot is.

On my Mac using Chrome it is in the upper right hand corner. That's a great tip, BTW. I never knew that, and it would have been very helpful for the first few months here. Heck... Probably still WILL be!

Uhhh. . . did I say left? I get those confused all the time. The other night, I meant to go to a Socialist Workers of America meeting, but ended up at a Klan barbecue.

If you are waitlisted for an upgrade (miles, GPU, paper cert), you'll clear based on status.

This is not someone who is waitlisted, though.

Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming, informative, and even blunt. I had never been to this site before, but all of you make me feel right at home. Thank you for taking the time to read my posting. I'm glad I found this site!

Got it. I confused myself where you said 'award upgrade' and thought of mileage-deduct upgrades, which indeed clear based on status. :)
