You must buy an expensive fare, M or higher, probably abut $4000 RT, and then use miles for the upgrade. Upgrade space can be hard to get on this flight.

    Welcome to Milepoint SilverBuck42!

Generally, status doesn't help on international flights for Delta as the complimentary upgrades are domestic only.

On my few times of using a upgrade going international, buying Air France Premium Voyageur (Economy Plus) and upgrading to business was the way to go. It was much cheaper than buying a M class on Delta and upgrading to Business.

One way to obtain an upgrade is if you fly during peak holiday periods (where Y is usually oversold and BE is empty), and that's where status helps as they usually process involuntary upgrades by status.

As for upgrade availability to NCE using SWUs or miles, it can be difficult during peak summer periods, but usually at this time of the year, Z inventory is widely available on this route. In any case, JFK-NCE is going seasonal this winter anyway (last eastbound is Jan 8; last westbound Jan 9). Nonstop service resumes Mar 24 2012.

I think the OP is interested in the nonstop into Nice from JFK rather than connecting through CDG on AF. But yes, if AF flights work, it is indeed a cheaper way to upgrade and also frequently a cheaper way to obtain a reasonable award ticket in business class. As a bonus, AF might give one the opportunity to try a new A380.
