Effective April 1, 2012, the points required to redeem for several Amtrak® travel redemption items will change. Amtrak redemption reservations that are made prior to April 1, 2012 for travel beginning on or after April 1, 2012, will not incur additional point costs unless you request a modification to the itinerary.

Additionally, as part of this update, on the Auto Train® there will no longer be any difference in fares charged for cars, SUVs or vans. The cost for bringing your vehicle will be the same fare, no matter what size vehicle. Motorcycles will still have a lower fare compared to other vehicles.

¹ Rule Busters allow Select PlusSM members to redeem for travel during blackout dates; Acela blackout times still apply.
² To travel on the Auto Train, you must reserve a space for a vehicle or motorcycle and check it in prior to travel.
Auto Train is a registered service mark of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation.

I finally get to use some orphan Amtrak points later this month. The increase redemption rates makes another trip on Amtrak unlikely. This is quite a substantial increase - some cases 50%.
