Kind of surprised there is no thread here, or did I miss it?

Trying to log into my Mileage Plus account gives me this error:

! Please contact the MileagePlus Service Center for assistance with your account.

As I am traveling, I really have better things to do, but I was concerned that my account had been compromised or frozen, so tried a few others I manage and got the same error. Since I didn't see any mention here, I looked on FT and found a three page thread confirming that everyone has the problem and that it extends beyond the MP login.

They just posted the following update on Facebook: "We have a network outage and are working to get systems back online. We'll update soon."

And they can't post that prominently on their own darn website, instead of directing people to call the Mileage Plus service center!?

United confirmed the system outage at 15:57 CDT: https://twitter.com/united/statuses/240538906007855104

As for surprise that something isn't being discussed here, why? In the grand scheme of things a 30-60 minute outage actually isn't very significant. And even if it is very significant there is minimal actual information to be shared or talked about. Baseless speculation gets boring pretty quickly.

Well, a default error message isn't trivial to edit or change when a different situation crops up. I suppose they could do that but fixing the actual problem seems a bit more important.

From random posts around the 'net, it seems like all systems are down. No new reservations, no accessing MP, manually boarding flights. If you're flying today...I'd suggest an extra hour or so at the airport (at the least) if your trip is important. Hopefully they'll get everything back up and running soon...but ~4pm ET for a complete system outage seems to be a terrible time for it to happen.

In the grand scheme of things, lots of stuff discussed here is insignificant and gets boring pretty quickly. Let's just shut this puppy down then.

Having a method in place to have a default error message of some sort is incredibly easy and something that should take hardly any time at all. We even did this when I worked for a small IT consulting company, even using a CDN. I have to agree that UACO should have something in place when these things happen. I'm not blaming anyone for anything, except pointing out that the way they have handled these events in the past is nowhere near acceptable.

They somehow managed to put a Tropical Storm Isaac warning on their homepage. I assume they didn't have someone edit the HTML by hand, but rather they have some sort of facility for a banner announcement in their system.

As for the default error message when login fails... well, it's not a difficult thing to implement a system that actually takes away the login when needed with a meaningful error. That could be useful for scheduled downtimes, too, for example. And surely they could spare one person to push the button to enable a meaningful error while the rest of the IT crew chases down the network error. All that would seem better than sending all their customers to flood their phones lines.

Yeah, because they can't check people in. So even once the system comes back online, it'll take a while to catch up. Here's hoping things get back online soon..

Things seem to be coming online now. United.com is back, but logging into MP account isn't working. Other people are reporting that the mobile app is showing reservations. It certainly sounds like things are coming back to normal, but with a system of this size...it's going to take a little while for everything to be back 100%. Glad I'm not flying today!
