United's first Dreamliner completes final assembly:)

United Airlines’ first Boeing B787 Dreamliner has completed the final assembly stage and is now set to move to the next phase.

After final assembly, the cabin and engines will be installed and the livery will be painted before the plane is ready for delivery in the second half of 2012, although a confirmed date has not been released.

    MUCH MORE!>http://www.businesstraveller.com/asia-pacific/news/uniteds-first-dreamliner-completes-final-assembly

Opinion: After a long delay, the plane is now a reality, a dream come true! Roll-out around the world is expected from ANA via United to Europe and beyond!:)

It seems strange to this non-expert that it takes another 8+ months after completion of final assembly to get the plane in the hands of COUA.

Maybe, but when you read the definition of "final" assembly, I am not so sure it is that out-of-kilter. A "final assembled" plane, it seems has no engines or no cabin! Considering it is still early in the model life of the 787, I would want the engine company to merge everything perfectly to the new model, so . . . .

Yes, it's normal for the airline to have to wait almost a year after assembly completion before the plane is placed in service.

This sounds like an Ikea home assembly model. I just hope that they don't get the rest of the plane from Ikea.

They won't start AKL until they get 2 787s so I guess realistically AKL won't be launched until October/November 2012...

Seriously? Boeing is planning to crank out 42 737s per month (!) soon, which means more than one per day. Where are they going to park the 400+ "final-assembled yet not ready to fly" aircraft?

ANA is launching in about 10 days on a couple special TYO-HKG charter operations. Scheduled service starts on November 1 with HND-OKJ and HND-HIJ flying once each daily. HND-FRA launches on January 21.

    I'm on HIJ-HND on November 3. :D :D

Obviously, Aramean, let us know how it is. Frankly, the domestic cabin config of that first plane you will be on looks decidedly un-luxe to me, with better prospects on the model planned for intl. But I may be all wet, so pls advise.

Is that confirmed? I figured they would start with only one plane, but just have it be 3x week service, or something along those lines that would allow the schedule to work with only one aircraft.

NOTHING is confirmed as of now... UA will take delivery of it's first 787 and fly it domestically at first to familiarize it's airline employees on the 787 and getting certifications before launching Auckland... Similarly to what ANA is doing right now...

Probably starting it on the triangle of ORD-EWR-IAD at first then adding it to transcon hub to hub.
