United Airlines won tentative approval today from USDOT to serve Haneda Airport from SFO.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said it chose the San Francisco route by United because it would “provide the best use of the one available opportunity.”

USDOT tentatively found that United’s proposal would introduce a new U.S. carrier at Haneda and would promote competition by giving travelers an additional choice for connecting service to Haneda via United’s SFO hub.

Objections to the DOT’s tentative decision are due by March 10, the department said.

NH has a nice lounge at the HND international terminal -- better than their lounges at NRT IMHO.

It will be interesting to see the timing of the UA flight. If it arrives at HND at 10pm, that means about a 6pm departure from SFO which sounds reasonable, though probably limits domestic connections. It could turn and depart HND at 11:30pm with an arrival at SFO at about 5:30pm, which still allows for west coast connections.

I think that sound a lot better than a 5-6am arrival, and a morning departure really doesn't work well at all

I for one am glad to have more options when traveling to Tokyo as I prefer Haneda over Narita! :D

I think it's a safe assumption to be making that this flight will be operated by a Boeing 787-800?

Over at TOBB they said it will be operated by sUA 772. At least initially.

10:20pm arrival time at HND and midnight departure.

That seems like a tight turnaround time with 1:40 on the ground.

Plenty of airlines turn a 777 in that kind of time. I imagine HND doesn't have delays at that time. But maybe the flight timings aren't yet announced either and it's still speculation. But it's the only kind of schedule that make sense unless UA wants to keep an aircraft on the ground at HND all day long.

Plenty of airlines can turn a 777 around easily in 1:40 but knowing United they're not going to turn something like that with precision. ;)

Seems UA is trying to postpone the launch to October now, citing a lack of appropriate slot times in HND.

UA won their effort to delay the start date. Service launches in October with (relatively) reasonable departure times:
Also, SFO-NRT will be reduced to 1x daily from 2x daily as part of the shift.

    1205AM departure from HND?

    I can't eat at 1205AM

I hope executive dining "dine when you wish" is in place. I personally would pre order an entree and eat it for Breakfast.
I do this regularly DXB-IAD with mixed results.

This is almost as bad at the botched AA JFK-HND departure time

Those are the times which come from operating at HND. The HND-LAX flight on NH has a similar departure time and the meal service is tailored to it. You have a snack on departure and a full meal ~6 hours later shortly before landing in LAX.

I'll gladly take it over the 90 min bus ride each way from NRT

Keisei Skyliner is about 40 minutes.

The times really aren't awful. Leaving Japan think of it as leaving the night before you would have otherwise left. Still time to go out to dinner. if you want.

Of course. Nippori is a convenient transfer to the Yamanote Line. At Ueno can transfer to several subway lines. I prefer this over the bus or NEX. I also like the Keisei Accessliner which branches off at Aoto and then runs on the Asakusa Line, from which you can transfer to virtually anywhere. I confess that I prefer trains, and at 6'2" tall I don't fit into Japanese bus seats all that comfortably.
