I was kind of surprised when I checked and no one else posted a similar story (or maybe I just completely missed it).

Earlier this week, United sent me this handle wrap.

    Anyone else get one?

I flew 105k in 2012 and have just under 11k so far in 2013.

I appreciate it because it was unexpected. Also a nice way to give a nod to your fellow 1K's.

Well, the "Set Your Bag Apart" part will likely become even more accurate, as the numbers of 1Ks will likely diminish even more in 2014.

    I'm 1K this year, haven't received it.

I was happy at United in the previous 15 years of being a 1K without a bag handle, but with reasonable upgrade and million-miler benefits.

So, my question is, if UA is really using these to identify 1K bags on regional flights, what happens next year to people who got a yellow bag handle wrap this year, but aren't 1K next year? Nothing on that indicates current status. Or, will we get a different color next year? Not that I'm complaining about UA sending it to me, or the possibility that it might help my bag arrive in the jet bridge a bit faster (too often first bag on means last bag off with UAEX), but it does seem to me that a true priority system would involve something a bit less permanent. I mean, that's the reason they (at least, CO) switched to disposable elite priority tags on checked bags some years ago instead of the old plastic ones we had each year that could be kept on a bag for years after someone was no longer an elite member.

I don't think they are using it to confer any status such as priority bag handling. I think they are suggesting YOU use it to make other people think you're hot stuff. In reality, few notice and if they do it's free advertising for UA.

The idea is not to convey status. It is simply to allow one to quickly identify one's checked baggage on a carousel by its bright yellow handle wrap. It is that simple.

I prefer to identify my checked luggage by having relatively unusual checked luggage.

I always say oh it's that bag with the UA, CO, EV, and DL tags. Works every time they've had to pull it from the ramp for x reason. :D

You'd be surprised at just how many "unusual checked bags" turn out to be quite "usual" on that carousel...;)

I've only seen my red Briggs & Riley bag with another passenger about five times in the 8 years I've owned it. Never had any trouble spotting it or confusing it with other bags.

I'm just going off posts elsewhere that suggest UAEX employees were told to unload the yellow handle bags first. But, who knows what the story really is.

Yeah, that yellow really doesn't go very well with B&R red...

That is their goal. Perhaps smartly, they're not advertising this as a benefit explicitly so that you're not disappointed if you don't get it. Although perhaps by not mentioning it, it removes some of the value that might cause you to put the handle wrap on your bag.

Not that this is a great sample-size, but at PSP last week, the guys on the ground there didn't have any idea about the purpose of the handles.

PSP is a SkyWest station that handles UaEx and DL Connection flights. They might not have got the memo or don't care yet.

I gave my yellow handle to a colleague

That way I don't have to worry about which baggage.handler did or didn't expedite my bag.

I tend to roll with just carry on 90% of the time anyway.

My 1K friend gave it to me as a gag gift for my birthday. I'd hate to put it on and have my bag confiscated for impersonating a 1K.

BTW, I also have some funky colored luggage- that's what they sell at Marshalls!
