United just re-scheduled my flight 3 hours earlier than it was originally booked for travel at the end of December. I went on the United site and found a flight that is a little more agreeable than a 3 hour change.

Could I call United and ask them to switch me to that? It is the same price (although I booked with miles).

I've done that before. Usually a couple of hours is what you need at a minimum to get a flight changed w/o penalty if it's due to a schedule change.

By all means call. I would expect them to accommodate you for a three hour change that is inconvenient. I have always been given my requested changes for any difference of ~2 hours or more.

Yea, just called. Got the 10:55 AM flight instead of 9:30. I'll take that. Gives me a little more time!

Just so you know in the future if you get any schedule changes. You don't have to have the same fare class available to be accommodated on another flight as long as they are still selling seats in your class of service. :)

fare class, in this case, being the same price (for us plain folk who arent as travel-literate as you :D) - Yea, I realized that, but figured I'd use it as leverage on the phone. I wanted to be out of there before 2, and the next flight after 10 PM was way later.

But thank you for the advice! Always appreciated.

Going to reply here since it's about a similar issue:

Now, my American Airlines from from IAD TO LAX was just rescheduled from 11:50 AM to 8 AM. There is only one other flight that day, and it's at 6:30 PM. I called and asked if they could switch me to a DCA to LAX flight, but they said that would require a $150 change fee. Which is annoying since THEY rescheduled my flight. Is there usually only 2 flights a day from IAD to LAX for American Airlines? Kinda bizarre.

IAD and LAX are both UA hubs with UA sometimes offering widebody service so I doubt AA tries to compete too hard at IAD.

According to policies at AA you're not eligible for the 300 Mile Re-Accommodation as the minimum criteria has to be four hours.

It does really depend on "YMMV" and the luck of draw on the agent you get. :-:

I would try calling back for a different agent. AA did have more frequencies between IAD and LAX but have slowly trimmed it. It's pretty thin between the two these days.

They must have moved the equipment over to ATL-LAX. ;)

That will make getting to Fiji or Tahiti easier using AA miles ex-ATL. :)
