Howdy Everyone -- title here says it all: elites need the *option* to defer SWU deposits!

Background: for CO folks the first batch of SWUs were linked to the elite program year, so in other words regardless of when you earned them the first batch of 4 CO SWUs were valid through the year earned (they were deposited immediately when earned), the entire next year, and then the first two months of the year after that.

So in other words if one hit 100k on CO @ 10/1/2010 the SWUs were deposited shortly thereafter and had an expiration date of 2/28/2012.

For the UA folks SWUs traditionally were deposited on 1/1/newyear after the 100k was flown with the option for a few to be deposited early, at the customers request and SWUs were valid for 12 months from date of request.

So if someone hit 1K @ 10/1/2010 their SWUs would be deposited 1/1/2011 and be valid through 12/31/2011, unless an early deposit was requested and then the validity would be 12 months from the month of the early deposit.

Now if I could choose any option I'd go with the CO one as that gives me the most flexibility but as I get the fact UA wants to take the "best" of each program, which is why we're now stuck with the immediate deposit of all SWUs with 1 year expiration dates.

I'm not trying to say SWUs should be valid for more than one year (although it would be nice!) but as someone who's currently facing a glut of more than 15 SWUs in my accounts without the possibility of using them for Q42012 travel I'd greatly appreciate the opportunity to defer my SWU deposits until 1/1/2012!

So I just wanted to throw it out there and see what folks thought about the idea of letting a customer opt to defer his/her SWU deposits until the end of the current elite year.

UA SWU's expiring in 2011 cannot be extended. If a person has any expiring at the end of Jan 2012-ONE (usually) may be extended for a few months after calling MP and after the waiver is announced. Which has been the case for several years.

UA SWU's expiring in 2012, which I just received 6 yesterday, would normally expire on 9/30/2012, however after a letter writing campaign by FTer's last year, an extension of those SWU's may be extended until 12/31/2012 after calling MP. I kept a copy of the e-mail that I received from 1K Voice, just in case I received the usual denial b.s..

Again CO & UA. as we all know, do things differently, but in about 3 weeks we won't need to banter around who has the better policy because the ONE NEW improved policy will suck, big time!

Yes, things are a changing aren’t they....

I seem to always be in the opposite situation. I burn all my SWU’s up within a few months after getting them (actually my wife helps with this….). So the rest of the year I try to find friends who can use my CR1’s and who don’t use their SWU’s (most all of my flights are international).

But as I said, things are changing and right now I have 4 SWU’s that have been waitlisted for many months and I never seem to clear any UG anymore until at the gate. So, I guess we will all see here in a few weeks how much more our FF program is going to be destroyed.:(

This year I used all of my SWU's for domestic flights as I am not going to pay 3 times the cost to be wait listed for up-grades to BKK for 3 of us.

SWU's for me are not what it used to be in the past and paying inflated prices for the privilege of waiting 330 days out for a standby at the gate, 20 mins prior to departure, ain't happening at my end!

Playing "Keep Away" is a game that I refuse to go along with, and dangling a few SWU's in front of me is one carrot that I can live without!

Side note --- Received my 6 SWU's on Monday, 3,500 miles short of 100,000 miles in my MP account, with 6,500 miles in my One Pass account, so as others have mentioned, these accounts are being tracked as one for total yearly BIS miles.

Yes, It was first stated that they would combine the two accounts at the end of the year, but as you just confirmed this is not the case.
Seems sad to use a SWU for domestic, but understand if NC/NF is not there then no need to purchase a W fare and wait at the gate for "maybe" an UG. Maybe sometime in the future we can discuss options;)
    Cheers,
    John

What I have decided to do when we need to visit the family in BKK is to use "A" saver awards, as UA has practically eliminated ALL saver awards and only grant standard awards, to BKK & back as of late.

Everything is being doubled (mileage awards on UA), or tripled (W fares to use SWU's). I've got 1 million miles in my account which are worth half if I want to fly UAL internationally, to where I want to go, and want to book it 330 days out on UA. StarNet blocking is another c.s game that UA is playing to make sure that we will be pleased with the NEW changes that we will like.

I'm a little frustrated because I made 1K way too early this year compared to previous years and my SWUs expire either on 2/29 or 7/31 so where the hell am I going to be able to upgrade after 7/31? thats atleast 4 months gap right there...

Well, there is a little hope (no promise) that UA will extend your SWU's out until the end of 2012, but who knows for sure.
We need a "Cupon Connection" here on this site;)

Just reviewed my spreadsheet. I will be passing the 100k threshold on Dec 26, to finish the year with 100,118 EQM.

Yeah we do somehow ... I mean ... I need some SWUs expiring this month or October and can trade for some...

I need to review mine again and see what the exact total would be... I'll be at 188,267 on October 6th so I guess I'm not in that big of a hurry to hit 200K after the Thanksgiving and Christmas Trips.

I was around 95K around the end of April, I had to stop flying CO/UA in order to delay my SWUs, it only worked until July and now my expiration is July 31 2012. I heard many UA 1Ks and GS members wanted their SWUs to post immediately in order to use them and this is why they went with this method. Personally I do not like it, they should allow you to choose when to get them, maybe 2 at time. In the process UA has lost a decent amount of revenue from me as I have been mostly flying AA.

Quoted for truth my good friend, it essentially "punishes" 1Ks for qualifying early in a sense IMHO. YMMV

I did ask this question via email and got the following answer :

    Dear German Expatl,

We did change the program this year, in response to many requests we
received, to award systemwide upgrades at the time they are earned.
After then receiving negative comments from other 1K members that they
had more than they could use credited to their account, we have made an
allowance that if a member requests next year, an extension of the
expiration date of any unused upgrades, we will give them until December
    31, 2012 to use them.

All you have to do is contact Mileage Plus next year, prior to the
original date of expiration, and request this extension.

    Best regards,

I think it's indeed a case of YMMV. It certainly helps those 1Ks that reach 100k early by flying a lot early in the year and who also used up all their SWUs on those flights and now face the issue of not having any SWUs for the rest of the year.

I personally think the fairest solution would be to tie the validity period of the SWUs to the validity of the 1K status that they came with.

So lets say I had a strong Jan/Feb next year with tons of C/F fares and made 1K by February you think my SWUs should be valid until Jan/Feb of the next year? that's a bit unfair.

    AGREE!!!
I have 100,000 miles booked on CO & UA through March of 2012, but it don't hardly matter, no how, cause I didn't drop $8,000 to buy these flights and if the rumor is true I ain't a-gonna be no durn 1K anyway, fur 2013.

Allowing SWU's to expire at the end of 2012 for me when I got there in Sept of 2011 is the way it used to be, and UA has allowed folks to get them as soon at they qualified instead of waiting until Jan 1st of the next year. Why would it matter to anyone if UA, in the kindness of their lil' hearts, agreed (after a major letter writing campaign from FTer's) to allow anyone who wanted to to extend their SWU's to the end of the following year. This gesture is not public knowledge anyway, so not every 1K is going to ask for this extension. But even if they did, what is the big deal to allow a very loyal flyer that qualifies very early to extend their SWU's? I don't get the reasoning behind handcuffing anyone especially since in the past 6 months or so it's us against them, so to speak, and they have the play book, the field, and the ball!

We're beating a dead horse, because in a few week we are really going to have something to bi--h about, and this is old news anyway!

No, that's not what I meant. Your 1K status that you earned in Feb (say, of 2011) lasts through Jan of 2013 (i.e., the current year and the next year). The SWUs should be valid for that entire period as well.

Assuming that the requests are honored every year going forward, yes, it's only a month. But I feel there shouldn't really be a need for that request (and as this thread seems to show, that option isn't very well known), it should be the standard behavior.

Wait a minute, didn't our SWU's used to expire at the end of Jan (like you said) and not Dec as I mentioned earlier, and we could extend one for a few months sometime in Jan?

I think you are correct on both counts.

Maybe they still do expire in (at the end of) Jan? I just checked my account, and I have one SWU that is expiring 1/2012. It's actually weird, because I shouldn't have that one. It (re-)appeared in my account after two SWUs cleared yesterday for a trip later in the year.

And I have definitely called UA to extend a SWU in the past when I ended up not using it before the expiration date.

Yeah, got the same answer when I called today. I qualified for 1K a long time ago and the 1KMP agent said I can call back next year to have them extended, one time exemption only
