I was originally booked SMF-IAH-DEN-DSM-DEN-IAH-SMF. I just got an email from United that my reservation is now SMF-ORD-DSM-ORD-SMF, which obviously makes more sense, but is significantly fewer miles! Looking for advice on what to do. Do I dare call the airline and try and get my old res back? Do I fly the new itinerary and ask for "miles as ticketed"? Anything I can do online without having to pay a change fee? I've never had this happen before. Thx in advance.

First, I'd look up the current flight times to see if you can even switch to your old itin. That way, you'll know all the flight numbers. Also make sure you have the original email with the original routing as ticketed.

As far as asking for the original routing, personally I would.

Call and tell them that you had intented to meet someone at the airport on the way to your "final" destination and that the changes prevent it from occurring. This you need your initial itinerary stops reinstated.

I think I figured out what happened (no thanks to United). According to my award wallet the IAH-DEN flight got moved back by 30 minutes which doesn't allow enough time in DEN for a legal connection. Looks like I'm shopping for some new flights before I call.

Was there possibly a DSM service cut? Making the routing invalid?

Just kidding, the IAH-DEN flight leaves at the same time, but instead of 767 it is on a dreamliner. I definitely want my old itinerary back!!!!

What would be the reason to make up a false cover story? Airlines don't need to know why we want to travel. And if they have a legit reason to request an explanation, what's wrong with the truth? Perhaps i'm too naive to be asking this.

Followup question- I ultimately have to call back because I didn't get what I want. But how can I see something online that the res agent can't see (the Dreamliner flight)? I gave her the flight number and she tried to tell me it was on US Airways .

The more I look into this, the weirder it gets. Looks like the service cuts are between SMF and IAH.

They should be able to rebook you onto US since it's a schedule change if there is no reasonable UA option though. I know that's not what you want to do but I'm just putting that out there.

There's no way that any of the flights described in the original itinerary are US operated.

If the original itinerary is no longer valid then you've gotta figure out what is acceptable as a replacement for you and then negotiate that. Good luck!

So I called again...Dreamliner flights 1420 (IAH-DEN) and 1528 (SFO-IAH) show up on the website, but another reservation agent (a seemingly smart one this time) says she can't see them. It is looking near to impossible to reconstruct a mileage run as good as the one I had without a redeye flight to IAH from the west coast- the one from SMF I guess is no longer in service and the one I was trying to snag out of SFO on a 787 apparently doesn't exist.

Yeah, I figured that much! Also I'm pretty sure US doesn't have a 787 either.

Because pictures are way better than words...This is a screenshot of what I had and am trying to re-create. It looks like 428 and 1015 aren't on the schedule anymore. What was 675 now appears on the website as 1420 using the 787, but the people on the phone can't see it. I tried asking for 5402 (SMF-SFO) at about 8pm on the 12th and then 1528 (SFO-IAH) which is the red-eye on the dreamliner, but they are telling me they can't see that one either. They are also telling me flight 675 now leaves as 7:50 am which would make the connection in DEN no good.

I've never tried to hide the fact that I was on a MR, and it has never caused a negative response, nor have I failed to get my desired routing (if still available). Not that I do many MRs, but this would also apply to routing necessary flights that I intentionally book "the long way" when time permits.

Would an overnight stay make the MR work better (assuming the agents could see the flights you wanted)?

I'm searching for November 13 per your original screenshot. You appear to be searching for December 13.
