United flight attendants face furlough in labor dispute
    Thursday, 16 Jan 2014

As United and Continental continue to combine their operations, the latest casualty will be 688 flight attendants at United who will be furloughed in April despite a hiring push for the same position at Continental, which hired 485 last year.

The action stems from the inability of United and its union to agree on a unified contract for the combined airline.

FA on my SEA-IAD flight today was complaining about this. I'm sure there's more here than meets the eye but I can't say I have a lot of sympathy here for anyone in the process. Well, maybe for the individual FA that didn't want the union to screw up their job status.

One of the articles I read today said they only negotiate one week a month with the UA flight attendants and have only been negotiating for one year. Doesn't sound like a serious commitment to get a contract in place when you're not continuously negotiating. Will this tip the new contract numbers in favor of the CO flight attendants? I don't know how many flight attendants are in each of the unions but am curious.

Is anyone else having thoughts of the US/HP union fighting that prevented that merger from ever being completed?

Oh, and I'd prefer nachos & salsa over popcorn. :D

Seems like it is a mistake for the union not to merge the two executive councils and speak with a single voice. Also a mistake not to focus on getting a joint agreement.
