United is doing their fantasy flight to the North Pole today. They'll be taking a group of terminally ill miss to the "North Pole" by way of a Bay Tour. It's really sweet of them. There's a bunch of other photos on my camera I'll post when I'm home.

If you're passing through SFO this morning, check out gates 82 and 86.

Is this the flight? Looks like they made it out to the Farallons :)

(not sure how to interpret the "actual" time stamps in the screenshot)

A couple years ago I walked by the gate as they were decorating it for the event (on my way to Kona, if memory serves right). Didn't know they actually fly the aircraft. Very nice!

Interesting, rcc lady told me they don't fly but drive from c to b gates in ORD. Said something about liability.

Glad to see that this is continuing and not falling under the category of a "change I will like" and for once, "think of the children" has meaning.

Who wants to go through a TSA pat down just so you can taxi between gates? Hopefully your information was wrong. Besides, ORD is closer to the North Pole.

Hmm, I don't see the flight track for the SFO fantasy flight at http://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL1804.

The setup at gate 82 looked really cute on Saturday. I'm really glad these folks do this.

What I wondered was: who gets to go on the upper deck?

Just to follow-up on this, I believe it depends which station we're talking about in regards to whether or not they fly. Some stations to fly them...other ones do a high speed taxi to the north pole/hangar. :)

Is United the only airline that does these flights/rides?

On Saturday I saw a portion of the IAH C terminal blocked off and decorated as the north pole. A bunch of the volunteers were putting it together.

Do like the airlines going out of their way to do these things for those kids. :)

Big thumbs down to that remarkably insensitive post.

If you are a terminally ill kid, or the parent of one, what the TSA does is probably one of the last things you're worried about.

Very few people think the way us frequent fliers do, and I think it's in very bad taste to have that kind of mindset when it comes to a lot of people doing good deeds to make a disadvantaged kid's day a little brighter.

It wasn't my desire to be insensitive. I do hope the kids enjoyed themselves. My suggestion was that I would hope United could do more than just taxi between gates. Clearly they're able to take them up in the air for a tour at SFO. Why not at all the other hubs? Getting to the airport, finding parking, making your way through security, etc., can be time-consuming and stressful even for frequent fliers, and it can be bad enough that it keeps a lot of casual fliers away (e.g., everyone else in my family). Add to that the recent public outcry against TSA doing pat downs of children, etc.

I could have phrased myself better, but I stand by my argument that hopefully UA could do more for the families who go through the ordeal of getting to the airport. Is it still worth it to make a kid's day special even if all s/he does is taxi between gates? Probably. But it's the bare minimum. UA could do better.

DL does a high-speed taxi on 4/22 at msp (it's a rarely used crossing rwy).
