I guess no surprise here with UA serving DOH via DXB now.

I have a business class award ticket on Qatar Airways IAD - Doha, Doha - Cape Town booked through United for only 60k miles for travel in Feb 2013. Hope it's still valid:)

The announcement says it will be, but after some point you will not be able to make any changes to it.

It is always regrettable for UA to loose access to partner awards.

sad sad news. I was looking at booking an award trip on them for this December. Tight schedule to make a wedding at a final destination UA doesn't serve.. decided not to book with Qatar via UA just to avoid any last minute changes drama.

That's too bad, they had lots of space in business class for destinations in Africa.

My award appears to have ticketed just fine. There was much confusion amongst phone agents about whether they were still allowed to book award tickets. Some saw the June 15th codeshare termination and thought that meant I could only book a ticket for travel through June 15th. Another saw the September 15th accrual and actual last date of codeshare flight numbers as the last travel-through date. Finally reached one who booked a ticket for next year for me.

    Can you elaborate :)

It's a pretty short hop though right, like a hour?

I was in Doha in December and flew LH from FRA.

United does not cater a drink cart on the DXB-DOH. Its a dry flight. (I was told because of catering issues/customs).
Qatar and Emirates both cater a drink cart with anything you want on it. LH too.

I posted this on TOBB, I'm copying it verbatim.

This really suxs and lowers the value of mileage plus in my opinion. I'll have to reconsider how much to put into mileage plus, now since IT HAS NO MIDDLE EAST PARTNER.

Yes, I've heard the argument from both sides of the coin. The gulf carriers essentially have limitless capital, (hello : 90 A380s?) and are new and have siphoned off traffic europe to asia, europe to australia business. Most of the European carriers hate them.

There is no room for 3 big middle eastern carriers. And Emirates tries to be its own network (and succeeds in my opinion)

Qatar is not going away any time soon. They have enough LNG revenue to keep them at the current state for the next 250 years. Star Alliance and United would be wise to find a way to make it a win win situation.

The old saying, "keep your friends close, your enemies closer?"

Stupid move to cut them out, Mr. Smisek. Stupid move.

Why is it assumed that UA was the one that wanted out? For all we know, Qatar wanted out of the deal because they thought they could do better on their own.

With Emirates gone from CO and QR gone from the new UA, it is virtually impossible to find an award seat to MLE as SQ is the only other option SIN-MLE. I think Austrian has a flight once a week in summer but I have never seen award seats on that flight.

Service to SEZ is also pretty sparse (ET from ADD is the only remaining option).

I'm flying Turkish Airlines CPT-JNB-IST-JFK. Not ideal but it was cheap!
