That's rather aggravating; and mildly disappointing.

Airlines just want to squeeze more money from flyers nowadays.

Not news. They'll raise em, give them a few days to see if they stick, if not, they'll rollback. It's happened 8 other times this year.

Someone must pay for those shiny new 787s, and it's not going to come out of the pay of executives.

Only 4 have succeeded, so 8 hikes+rollback combos.

Well, if we're using that metric then only 7 have failed so far; this one is pending. :p

Anyone who has followed my posts this year knows that I have been anything but a United cheerleader. I also do not like paying more money for necessities, of which flight is one for me.

All that said, who in their right mind would want to be in their business these days? Fuel alone is creating a horrific challenge of pricing tickets at a point which customers will pay and is still profitable.

Recreational fliers can often opt to drive or stay home when prices rise. Business travelers are being forced to use more and more technology to replace old travel habits. Not to mention the cost of shipping everything they need for operations and maintenance. That's driving up the price of everything (or removing the profit from vendors fighting to stay alive).

$4 to $10 doesn't sound unreasonable to me. I see my competitors try to hold prices when their costs are rising, and our phone rings every day from new customers looking to replace a vendor who has shut down.

Personally, I have always opted out of recessions. Instead of trying to avoid increases, we increase service. Instead of cutting back on travel, we're visiting more customers. Instead of tightening up on receivables and returns, we give the people we trust more credit and make it easier to return orders when the customers make mistakes. The result is record growth and repeat business.

If UA will get their service back on track, they can pull this off, but they may be putting the cart ahead of the horse by trying it right now while they still have PR issues aplenty.

Yes, but even if it doesn't last, they still probably sold a bunch of tickets at the higher prices while they were out there.

Posting in the pointy end of the plane with a Samsung Galaxy S III using Milepoint.

I think so...a trip I was monitoring to DC later this month had increased earlier this week by $6 and now has come back down.

Most increases, regardless of airline, are done in the hopes others will do it as well.

But in UA's case, especially with the frequency in which they have done it lately, I wouldn't be surprised if they're doing it just for a quick increase in cash. It's not likely it would do very much, but given UA's transactional mindset, it wouldn't surprise me if that's partly the way they are thinking.
