United Airlines today launches its MileagePlus Digital Media Store, a first-of-its-kind in the airline industry, giving MileagePlus members the opportunity to use miles for music tracks, albums and movies.

The Digital Media Store features a full catalog of music, including popular songs from the past and present in a wide range of genres, such as pop, rock, country, jazz and classical. Certain movies are available now, and TV shows and additional movies become available later this year. United also plans to feature exclusives on the site. The first exclusive is a bonus remix of “Dance Again” with purchase of “Dance Again …The Hits,” the recently released Jennifer Lopez greatest hits album.

“The MileagePlus Digital Media Store offers the perfect complement to our other non-air award options such as hotel stays, car rentals, merchandise and once-in-a-lifetime experiences,” said Krishnan Saranathan, managing director of United MileagePlus. “This is one more example of our commitment to expanding the world’s most rewarding loyalty program for our members.”

Because what the record labels need is a healthy dose of airline management theories to turn them around. ;)

150 miles per song (10% off for elites) is pricey.

It's a rip off pure and simple.

    Let's see 10 songs = 1500 miles.

According to the reward maximizer, 1500 miles would cost 45.00.

Who wants to pay 45.00 for 10 songs.

Interesting that elites get a 18%-ish discount. At least my account does. And the music is DRM-free, which is nice. The movies aren't but that's to be expected.

If nothing else this is a much better way to clear out an account than redeeming for magazines.

That's interesting....it's 135 miles per song for me, a 1k. So the discount is not based on status?

Showing 120 for me as well. And I'm 1K. Maybe based on how many miles you have to burn?

Maybe because you're an Infinite 1k, and I am very much finite - likely to drop to Platinum this year? :)

Just bought a song (150 miles:( ), I'll wait and see when my mileage expiration date changes. I'm guessing the traditional 4 - 6 weeks.

It's telling me I qualify for "preferred" pricing of 135 miles/song. I'm gold this year but I'm sitting on a lot of miles. I appreciate being a preferred customer but won't be using miles on this for sure! :D

120 miles per song. At that price my CD collection is worth about 480,000 miles -- what's that, four business class round trips to Asia?

Or 120,000 round trips, depending on the current rate.

The good news is that songs which fit the experience of today's United Airlines are free:
    "Wait" by White Lion
"No Reply At All" by Genesis
"Blame It On The Rain" by Milli Vanilli
    "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama
"Learn To Fly" by Foo Fighters
    "Misery" by Maroon 5
    "Run Around" by Blues Traveler
"Where Is The Love" by Black Eyed Peas

I'm a silver and am getting 115 miles. On the other hand, they probably know that I'd normally buy through iTunes through the MP store, adding MP miles and lining the orchard's pocketbooks, so maybe they need to sweeten the deal for me. :)

Aren't miles a liability for airlines? Seems to me it's in the best interest of any airline to get people to use their miles. And, hopefully, not for flights.

That handle was picked before the new United redefined what loyalty means. Not sure if I want or will be 1K going forward.

Well there's infinite 1Ks to pick up the slack if you won't be meeting the minimum quota under the new United. ;)

I think the amount of miles needed depends on an artist or a song. I see songs anywhere from 95 miles per song through 135 miles per song. and if it makes any difference, I am only silver ;)
