So, it turns out I have a trip to Rio with a friend scheduled, arriving on March 1st. Neither of us got around to arranging accommodation, and now it's scarce. My friend has business contacts in the city who are working on finding some place for us, but even they are pretty pessimistic.

Anyone have any clever suggestions for getting someplace to stay in Rio during Carnival? Don't need any particular brand or chain, as long as it's not a brothel (most of the places that show up on searches are prominently labelled Adult Only).

suggest some contact of yours check into a room in a guest house a few days in advance of Carnival in Catete or similar collar area

you would need to eat the price of the advance days

seems you might be staying in a brothel or under a bridge, it is a mad house during Carnival

AirBnB or using your hotel status for guaranteed availability?

No hotel status (actually, I guess low level at a couple of places, but nothing with guaranteed availability). I checked Home Away and not a lot was available there, either.

Call a few hotels and ask if they have a waiting list?

I just checked Sheraton Rio hotel and resort for 3/1 - 3/4 and they show availability for USD 794/night prepaid and it says to call them for redemption options...this was on Spg.com

Thanks -- I have no SPG points or status.

However: My friend's connections have found a hotel for about $350 a night (I think) in Copacabana, which is getting booked for us now. We'll have to pay for one night we won't use, but it will let us check-in immediately upon arrival. Also, Hotels.com and Booking.com are showing rooms at some of the highly rated Windsor hotels for under $400 for a twin.

So, looks like we'll be okay. Once we're definitely squared away, I'll post an update.

    Thanks all!

Glad you managed to get it sorted out... that's definitely a facepalm situation. Sounds like a fun trip though!
