It will tell you once you are upgraded, Otherwise, you must have faith in the CPU computer system...

but 1 cannot check in til 24 hours before anyway, negating the 48 hour window. And personally I would never check in online- too many variables can change between then and flights.
    Thanks alot.

One can always call in and have :)nline checkin reversed. I find that there are far more situations where it is an advantage than a disadvantage. Most important is if for some reason you are unexpectedly late to the airport you can arrive well past the last checkin time and still make a flight. I've been saved by this multiple times.

Does earlier check-in help with your position on the wait list?

Abs:)lutely! Here is one example, by the way. Recently I had a 55 min. connection at AMS and I was on two separate tickets. (We can argue about the stupidity of doing this another time) I needed to check in for my AMS-EWR flight in advance, as the last checkin is one hour before flight time. There was no way that even an on-time arrival of my flight to AMS would have allowed me to get to my connecting gate in enough time to check in before the cutoff.

Some of the upgrade and :)ther wait lists have checkin time as a tie-breaker.

Status and fare class come first, but time added to the list is generally the last tie-breaker and that "add" usually happens when you check in for the flight.

There's absolutely no harm in being checked in and then not taking the flight. Yes, they have to undo it if you call to change things, but it really isn't a big deal.

And the list you see online is only for what's used at the gate. In advance of that the systems running in the background use date of ticket issue as the tie-breaker.

Unless I can't physically check in online for some reason, I absolutely positively always checkin online as soon as I possible can as well as allow for auto-checkin. Especially if I haven't yet been upgraded.

Even if it's just a very small percentage of the upgrade rules, checking in earlier can help on a upgrade.

Is it possible to set up auto-checkin for one-way flights?

Aut:eek:-checkin can only be enabled when initiating checkin for the first part of a journey. One-way flights do not qualify.

Bummer. I mostly buy one-ways. That explains why when I check in for the first flight at T-24 I am often seq no. 100, and there just aren't many inbound connecting pax departing SEA.

Kind of like Southwest, then on one way tickets. Great for people with a lot of time on their hands, better be ready on that 24 hour mark. Set those outlook reminders, folks!

Don't know if there's a way to tell if you're on the upgrade list before check-in, but believe you can tell if you're not. Check "fare class" - if the system is showing complimentary upgrades available, and you're w/in your window, and have not been upgraded, it's time to call.

    This morning's example:

Have MSY-iah-ewr... 3/14. The MSY-iah cleared 96 hrs in advance, the iah-ewr leg had not cleared this a.m., but "fare class" was showing R4, RN4.

Called the 1K line, got thru in about 4 minutes, the RA didn't know why I had not cleared but manually tweaked the system, am now in F.

(While waiting for computers to do various things we chatted a little - she was nearing the end of 12 hr. shift, which I think most RA's are working - they're pretty frustrated w/ the process too - be nice to your RA!)

    PRACTICE POINTER:
If you're w/in upgrade window, not upgraded and R (or is it RN?) is showing positive, give a call - it can't hurt and might help, as it did in my case.

The agents are not supposed to do that and getting it done is very much the exception, not the norm.

You're lucky. I wasn't so lucky today when I called about my flight to DC having R3 and RN3 within my window and not getting upgraded. I was just told that I had to be on the list as a 1K and the system would process it.

    I feel your pain!

Call early, call often. Ask at check in. Ask at the gate. Never give up!

I cannot even think of any instance why it would be bad to be checked in for a flight. Can someone tell me?
    I always check in asap.
