UA status by flying only partners, but not Status Challenge?

Can I earn UA status by flying *A partners only (transatlantic), without any UA flights? Or is there a minimum # of UA flights I must have?

However, it looks like the rules for the Status Match Challenge are the opposite: only UA flights (+ Copa) are eligible for the challenge, and not *A flights. Is this correct understanding?

    Thanks!

Double-check with UA if you do indeed do a challenge, as own-metal is not always the case with all challenges (for example, you can fly Alaska, British, Japan Air Lines or even WestJet and get credit towards AA's challenge). Read the fine print carefully.

Currently doing a status match challenge with UA. The current challenges expiring 12/31/12 are own metal only, no partner flights.
