UA won the DOT slots to go SFO-CAN, but has stopped flying the route. Are they allowed to restart at any time or do they have to apply again? Seems like something the 787 (at least) could easily fly.

I would expect service to begin elsewhere in China before CAN, like CTU. CAN has a lot of spill to HKG and is a SkyTeam stronghold.

From my (albeit small) understanding of HKG bound traffic, a portion is transiting onwards (BKK, SIN, etc), a potion is truly HKG bound, and a significant portion (guess 25%) is mainland bound like me.
Many people connect via ferry or coach bus, so if CAN was an option via UA, it would be a great alternative for this group of travelers.
Hopefully as economy improves or manufacturing base returns back to S.China more demand will exist.
