I wonder how much of a hit on income they see as their credit cards get older and more established?

I somehow doubt that the lack of a big sign up bonus or a new card with chase is what's hurting the airline.

Sent from a place using a fruit thing.

All airlines were impacted evenly by the winter weather. Even AA's DFW hub and DL's ATL hub saw significant snow/ice and related cancellations and interruptions. I hope the board and shareholders probe deeper into why $$ is down exclusively with UA.

If I may.... How about unhappy customers leaving it for other airlines? :)

My guess (and that's all that it is) is that they know why it's down. However, it's not within their ability to repair things.

There's only so much tinkering with yields you can do by pumping out more RJs, and I don't think that the folks who have earned 1K status really like those airplanes.

This cost-cutting might be good for the bean counters, and I realize they have an obligation to their shareholders, but its damaging an already damaged brand.

They're not going to win back frequent fliers with yellow baggage handles and limited time amenity kits. They need to make changes in their mindset and how they approach things. And if they can't, don't recognize it or don't want to, then it's time for new leadership.

On my last trip to the U.S., 4 out of my 5 flights were on RJs, and that's only because the earthquake in Chile caused a late arrival of my departure from PTY, thus a misconnect at LAX. As much as I love to fly, it was torture. If they actually get those new E175s up and replace the E145s, CRJ200s and 700s, then it might be OK. That's a great aircraft, but without mainline meal service, it is going to remain lacking in comparison.

As for new leadership, there is a relatively new thread over on TOBB about the topic. Seems to be something the pax want. Whether or not the BoD sees the need is still in question, however. Some say the BoD needs to go first, then let the new crew fire Smisek. I like that idea. Just don't know enough about the processes to opine about how and when it could happen.

In many ways, I am rooting for United to pick itself up.
I may not fly them (yet) and I like Delta but Delta has to have some real competition to keep improving.
If there are lesser and lesser viable airlines, it can only be bad for the customers.

All Icahn cares about is his wallet and share price. Don't really see him giving a darn about pax.

Sent using a small piece of fruit.

I guess Smisek's cashew nut cuts did not make much of a difference :p

With the stock down 20% over the past several days, the next round of nut cuts might be in human form.

Time to get another box of Kleenex down here at my desk. The news is so sad, I am going through them faster than UA is "saving money."

jeff seems to think that ten cuts that save $2 million are worth it even if they lead to $40 million less ticket revenue
