I booked 2 J award tickets to Europe with a stopover in SFO. I called to change the date of the SFO flight and when I logged in to my UA account I saw an extra 100,000 miles credited as an award redeposit. How frequent does this kind of error occur? Does UA review miles credited by their agents? What is a safe amount of time to wait before using the miles?

No idea, I had it happen once. But no idea how isolated it is.

    Yes, mine eventually got corrected.

Never. You're not entitled to them and you won't have a leg to stand on if they choose to void a ticket you book up to and including on the day of travel.

There are way too many complaints here and on TOBB where people knowingly do something they shouldn't and then complain when it blows up on them. Don't be that guy.

Sent from a place using a fruit thing.

I would also make sure your 2 J tickets are still intact and one didn't get cancelled accidentally.

Yup! That's the most important vs sitting on an extra 100,000 miles waiting for them to be taken back

This is the last remaining segment left on the itinerary. It is a one-way that was added on the end. Searching various sites, I haven't heard of many cases where the airline didn't eventually take the miles back. I'm considering the approach of calling UA and hope they throw some miles my way for being honest. What would happen if UA looks for the miles back but my account balance is insufficient?

I had that happen once and it was fixed on its own in about 2 days.

UA recently clawed back misposted miles from my account for an error from well over a year ago (duplicate flight). They were certainly correct in doing so, but I personally found it to be in poor taste to do that for ~1,500 miles from March 2012.

Do I consider that poor taste? Not really. Poor IT and business practices? Yes.
