    Not betting on this being honored, but --
    http://boardingarea.com/blogs/viewf...ited-awards-originating-in-china-for-4-miles/

    Some reports are that they're deducting the correct amount of miles. But folks who don't have full price miles in their account are able to book the award.

    Again, I doubt they'll honor it. But it's still going to be interesting to watch at least.

    And the glitch of showing total price = 4 miles works for United Standard awards and partner awards in all classes of services as well.

    I booked it with no immediate change to my mileage balance. Now... Will they honor it?

    It seems that accounts with the correct mileage are having the full usual mileage amount pulled -- even though the receipt shows a lower price.

    Meanwhile accounts with fewer miles are having tickets issued but no miles pulled at all.

    I doubt it will be honored. I really don't think it will. Some point to new DOT rules requiring airlines to honor tickets that have been sold even in the event of a mistake.

    It's not clear to me that this applies to award tickets, however. (That in the case of free promotional tickets, saying that the number of miles required for the ticket is higher than originally quoted counts as imposing a higher price)

    Well, I've now booked two RT US-HKG as well as two add ons HKG-Asia.

    US-HKG are all on United metal the HKG-Asia are not on United metal. I only had 4000 miles in my account when I booked.

    So far 3 of the 4 of the trips have ticketed (I have email eTickets that show 4 miles charged) for the reservations. All of the trips have now eTicketed.

    However, as gleff pointed out, none of the miles have been deducted.

    Can't wait to see how this plays out.

    Booked and ticketed one trip for four miles. Receipt shows 4 miles as the cost though they have now pulled 140K from my account.

    I have enough miles in my account, but no miles have been pulled from my account, and the ticket has been issued. Having never been to Hong Kong, this is too good to pass up. In the event that they honor it, does anyone know if I will need a visa to visit there?

    I tried it twice and the credit card wouldn't work (United MileagePlus Explorer oddly enough), so I changed to my AAdvantage Visa and it processed. I've gotten the receipt, but it says that it hasn't been confirmed yet so I doubt it will process. I don't have nearly enough miles to cover the normal award.

    Yes. Several people know if a visa is needed.

    If you are a US citizen you do not need a visa to visit HK. Mainland is a different story.

    Well they just deducted the 130,000 miles. Now I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and cancel or wait to see how this plays out.

    @Geo - Very funny. ;)

    @adambadam - Thank you! :D

    Booked a DEN-NRT-HKG flight for next May to try out the 787.

    Part of me feels like I was being opportunistic to the point of being ethically questionable by trying to stick them with their obvious error. Another part of me remembers well all the times that I made errors or had some mistake of theirs affect me negatively, etc. I don't recall them being at all compassionate.

    The more I think about it, the more I think that they should just correct it quickly and swallow the losses that occurred during the short period of time that it was available. It's not as if every flight is going to be filled with free-flying passengers.

    @United - Accept it, honor it and move on.

    Wow.. Seriously? I just booked a coach ticket. ::hitting self on forehead:: It never dawned on me to try booking F or BC. Maybe I'll try it again now that I don't have enough miles to cover it. :D

    First class standard awards. If you're an elite or have the United Explorer card you get last seat availabiltiy. If not, you still get close to it.

    I'm happy I have a TON of miles sitting out there on SQ F redemptions just in case I want them. ;) So I didn't have enough miles in your account.

    If you DO have enough miles and want them not to take any out while sending you an e-ticket receipt, you just book other award travel FIRST. Deplete your account. Then book this. Then refund the other award tickets (which anyone can do within 24 hours regardless of status).

    Seems like someone finally checked their email at UA.

    The site errors out with no availability when I go to book another trip.

    They figured it out. No results are coming up now when searching for award travel to HKG. I'll still take my E+ ticket if they end up having to honor it.

    I did get me and PLUS_1 a trip to HKG all in F for 8 miles. I'm curious to see how this plays out.

    My booking has ticketed... so fingers crossed for the next few days. Hopefully I'll be spending Christmas in Asia this year, and flying F to get there!
