I just booked a flight that goes on a few UA/TG/NH flights, here to Asia is in business while return is in economy.

As I was looking at it, I see that the return trip is only allocated one checked bag for free. The 2n bag is $70 per segment (since I connect in Japan this 2nd bag will be $140) per person.

That to me is really strange as almost all intl flights I've been on allow 2 bags per person. But it appears doing award travel in eco they only allow one? Is this true? Or simply the rules have changed.

What's the status of the passenger the miles came from?

The status applying to the passenger thing really only works for UA metal. With partners don't count on it.

As for only one bag on TPAC flights, that's been the rule for a while now. If you are flying TG or NH back into Japan for the stopover then check the rules of the operating carrier for that route. There is a very good chance they will apply the weight concept rather than the piece concept for the baggage allowance. That could further alter what you get versus what you are expecting.

Hmm is the 1 bag rule something that is strickly award travel vs paid?
Looking at TG/NH website they both state 2 bags (50lds each) per ticket.

    http://www.ana.co.jp/wws/us/e/asw_common/guide/baggage.html
    http://www.thaiairways.com/plan-your-trip/before-you-fly/en/baggage_and_optional_fees.htm

Also no the way to Asia I get two bags ... is that because we're flying Business Class?

    My Itenerary FYI is
    UA SFO - ICN (Bus)
    TG ICN - TPE (Bus)
    TG TPE - BKK (Bus)
TG BKK - HND (Eco) $70/for 2nd Bag
NH HND - LAX (Eco) $70/for 2nd Bag.

And we'll only be hit with the $70 once correct? Not again in HND.

Assuming your itinerary is SFO-BKK, BKK-HND, HND-LAX on three separate check-in dates you'll get:
    1) 3x70# at SFO as a business class passenger.
    2) 20kg (~45#) in as many bags as you want from BKK-HND; they're on the weight concept there because you are not checking through to LAX.
    3) 2x50# at HND.

Sorry I wasn't more clear, but My destination is BKK with a stopover in TPE. HND is only a connector where I transfer from TG to NH. Layover time is less than 2 hours.

Looking at your response is weird because when I look @ the reservation, It doesnt mention anything about bag #3, just 1 & 2 .

    OK...

You still get 3x70# as a business class customer out of SFO. Go here and put in SFO-ICN in business class and it clearly says 3 even though it only shows pictures for two.

TPE-BKK in business class is on the weight concept, not the piece concept. You get a max of 30KG.

BKK-HND-LAX in Y you are looking at the TG piece concept and you get 2x50#.

    Nope :(

That's what I thought; but if you see below it says the 2nd bag is $70.

Depending on the trip, I could take 1 bag for a month or need 2+ bags for a weekend.

Got family in BKK; so Only 1 for me; the other one is going to aunt & stuff in Asia. Then on the way back one bag back to the US for parentals.

OK, but that's not actually TG's policy and TG is who you will be checking in with in TPE and BKK.

If you look at the cost to ship the same amount of stuff … the cost of the bag seems much better :)

When I fly to Philippines for my mission, I consider the cost of $70 for an extra bag to be cheap.
The cheapest Balikbayan box is $75 and it takes up to 2 months to get where I am going!
