    Hey, all

The wife and I be heading across the pond here pretty soon on a UA award that includes some LH and TP segments. There doesn't appear to be any way to select seats for partner segments on UA.com, but they list your confirmation numbers with the partner airlines so it occurred to me that it might be possible to get seat assignments directly from the partners.

Before I waste my time on that endeavor, does anyone know if that's possible?

yes, for LH ...go to LH.com, pull up your booking with the LH PNR and select seats.
As you mentioned, you can see your LH PNR when you look at your reservation on UA.com

You have to call TP to do seating assignments for that flight.

    What he said.

For some partners, you'll need to give them a call with their PNR (available in your reservation at UA.com), but is still relatively easy to do (usually).

My recent transpacific was on flights by ANA/TG. With ANA i could just login and use the conf# online to select seats. For TG I had to call UA and get TG's confirmation number, then call TG and select seats.

Not all LH flights will let you assign seats in advance. Short-haul flights in Y especially are unlikely to do it.

Also, even if you don't have the PNR you should be able to call the other airlines and give them the flight number and date and they should be able to get the PNR for you.

Not all NH flights too actually. I usually fly Business or Economy and only after a phone call to the Japan reservations center. Otherwise, UA will just say call them. I HAVE been able to do the login with the ANA PNR before but most recently, (last week from NRT-SFO) I wasnt able to.

This is especially true when you make modifications to your reservation that include new airlines.
SQ is great about helping with this.

Doesn't every Asian carrier with operations in the US have an office in LA? I know KE, CZ, and TG all do. I'm also assuming OZ does too since LA has one of the largest Korean populations in the world.

Wow, quite a discussion for what I thought would be a yes/no question. :)

As it happens, I was able to use my confirmation number on Lufthansa's site to pick seats for both the LH segments and the TP segments.

    Thanks, everyone.

Short of doing it online (with other partners) I call -- early. The United CSRs always give the stock caveat, but they ask and I tell them what kind of seat I want, and it has always come through. I don't think I've ever tested it as far as a specific seat (e.g., "8D"). Again: Early.
