Hoping to launch in June 2014, subject to government approval. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/united-airlines-applies-u-dot-140500082.html

Interesting flight times; the plane will be on the ground in CTU for ~15 hours to make that schedule work.

JFK-SFO-CTU -- then anywhere in China: Such a route would be tailor-made for my style of travel, and be better than the more northern and "isolated" hub that is PEK...

Wonder if they'd consider putting in a CTU-NRT-CTU turn to fill those hours.

...wait for it...wait for it...damnit, I'm expecting colpuck to mock this statement any second now :)

I'm happy to mock it for you. :p

Doesn't make much sense to me to add that route, and that's assuming they have 5th freedom authorities to do so. It would take a slot at NRT and there is already daily NH service on the route, albeit on a narrow-body plane so not a ton of seats. The limite schedule would mean it only really picks up local traffic, not connections, and at 5+ hours each way plus the timing of the CTU flights the schedule for CTU-NRT-CTU would be miserable. Something like a 9pm departure from CTU arriving NRT at 3:30am and then the return leaving at 5am and arriving just in time to turn and do the 10am departure to SFO.

Does that mean they are taking the 787 off of ROC-EWR? That's a shame.*

    *Total joke and sarcasm folks

that's not mocking, that's an examination of facts to reach a conclusion that makes a lot of sense, if only i'd taken the time to look at the schedules and existing service on the route :)

I was hoping for SFO-CAN, but CTU is good too.

I was hoping for SFO to PPT or something to give AerFrunch a run for their money.

I would prefer a targeted invite to pay $350 RT to inaugurate the route, after which one gets to be treated to what CTU is known for.

I guess the same crew can fly it out and back

UA likes to have the transpacific flights arrive in SFO in the morning so that they can connect anywhere in domestic USA, even when a double connection is needed. Pretty much any flights that go farther west than NRT, KIX or ICN have to RON for that to work - it's certainly what they do in HKG (yes, there is a SIN tag), TPE (when they flew it), PVG. ICN has a relatively early SFO departure and relatively late return as compared to other TPAC flights at SFO in order to make the same day turn work.

I guess the westbound departure ex SFO could be later, but maybe they are erring on more than adequate ground time so that the crew can get its required rest time even if there is a delay on the outbound.

Actually the same crew would NOT fly it back the same day on arrival. It will be a 39 Hour layover in CTU which is pretty lucrative for TPAC standards.

The aircraft has about 15 hours on the ground. With the 3 day/week operation, unless that crew takes it back, they'd have to wait 63 hours on two of the rotations and 87 hours on the third. I don't think that's the plan.

Keep the international date line in mind. Sat SFO departure arrives Sunday evening at 6:50pm. That aircraft becomes the Monday 10am departure, and I bet the same crew returns. Mon SFO departure arrives Tue evening 650pm, becomes Wed morning 10am depature. Rinse and repeat.

The plane comes home the day after it gets there, not the same day. Almost certainly the same crew based on that.

They could easily do NRT-CTU-NRT. Or even somewhere asia-CTU Easily. I doubt the Chinese would let UA do that tho. Maybe time to dust off the old PA treaties Juan Trippe negotiated.
