    Very sad...having become accustomed to much cooler temps here in the UK, it is a bit of a challenge when I go back to the US.

    Wow, very sad! Sounds like they were unprepared (there are signs indicating 4-wheel drive only as the article indicates) and given that the temps can be extreme, I am not sure I would have ventured into Joshua Tree at this time of the year.
