According to Incentive Travel & Corporate Meetings, DoubleTree by Hilton announced a strategic franchise agreement marking Hilton Worldwide's return to the Las Vegas Strip after 14 years. Under the terms of the agreement, Tropicana Las Vegas will continue to own and operate all 1,600 guestrooms in the resort, which recently completed a $200 million renovation.

The hotel's new name will be the Tropicana Las Vegas - a DoubleTree by Hilton, effective January 2013. Guests will be able to earn and redeem Hilton HHonors points and airline miles at the resort.

"We clearly need to get Hilton Worldwide back on to the Las Vegas Strip," Rob Palleschi, global head of the Doubletree by Hilton brand told USA Today.

"We are thrilled to be affiliated with such a first-class organization that shares our customer-centric values, and we are honored that DoubleTree by Hilton selected us to represent their marquee brand on the Las Vegas Strip,” said Tropicana Las Vegas CEO Alex Yemenidjian. Yemenidjian and his partners bought the Tropicana out of bankruptcy in 2009, and now wish to transform it into an upscale property. Yemenidjian told USA Today that though the number of visitors to Las Vegas has returned to peak periods, the increased number of rooms in the city and the different mix of travelers has changed the market.

Hilton currently operates approximately 17 properties under various brands in the Vegas market, including an airport DoubleTree by Hilton.

The Tropicana went through a renovation recently and their public areas are pretty nice. Great location since it's located by MGM Grand, Excalibur/Luxor/Mandalay Bay, and NY-NY. It's close to the airport too so taxi fares will be pretty cheap from LAS.

They have a pretty sweet sports booking area which is managed by Cantor Gaming.

That's an interesting development, it's a glorious return for Hilton into the heart of LV after losing the LV Hilton.

The LV Hilton was too far out of the way for me, so this is really great news.

A lot of other great HHonors properties such as the HGV at the Flamingo and HGV Elara which are all on the Strip.

However, I'm glad that Doubletree makes it's debut in LV and with a great location to boot.

How are the guest rooms? Were they part of the renovation?

Now, if it was a Hilton Garden Inn, I might almost want to maybe someday consider possibly taking a trip to LAS again before I die.

I really like what they had done to the casino and lobby areas. Assuming the rooms were as nicely renovated, I'd be happy to visit once I can get points and with reasonable rates.

With HH earning & redeeming opportunities? Elite status recognition? If yes to both, then there is something to get excited about ... otherwise, no big deal/news!

I stayed there for CES last January. The renovated rooms are nice. Nothing spectacular, but clean, with modern decor, a 42" TV, and if you're lucky, a decent view of the strip. Wi-Fi worked well. My room was priced on par with Excalibur, which is pretty dated, and significantly below neighboring MGM and NYNY.

Par for the course in LV.

If the Trop is going to keep the resort fee, I'll continue to stay at Caesars properties unless there is a big enough of a price difference to make up for it.
