Trolls and Sockpuppets

I am two days into MilePoint and loving it, but also a little embarrassed about a misstep I made, so in hopes of providing caution and clarity to other newbies, I would love it if some of our more esteemed members (and I mean this in its sincerest form) would compare and contrast "trolls and sockpuppets".

Okay, I misunderstood the meaning behind sockpuppet and took it as a negative. Really its not so bad - trolls on the other hand...

 

A troll is someone who is causing a ruckus in an online forum.
I always thought an SP was someone who was using a misleading identity in an online forum, often in support of a troll.

 

FP: welcome to milepoint and we're all quite pleased your first few days here have been positive. As sobore correctly identifies, a sockpuppet typically refers to a false identity through which a member speaks with or about themselves, pretending to be a different person and at times in support of a troll. However, the key is to put into perspective where the term is being used and how. For instance, it might be used in a community thread to add a spice of humor when referring to a close member often also in a conversation—as in "you or the sockpuppet" ... sort of a reference to an alter ego. In those situations it is a humor mechanism. Used in a more serious tone when referring to a content related post or thread, it does indicate in the mind of a member the above, sometimes, but not always true.

Regardless, members on milepoint should leave accusations in conversations to myself and/or Report Post and not engage in a sliding comment war that would disrail the goal for milepoint to be the friendly place for frequent flyers.

YBL. I thank you for having introduced me to a term that I had never heard before, "sockpuppet." I'm shocked and dismayed that, even though I have been following Randy around the web for ten years, neither he nor his sockpuppet had ever taken the time to explain it to me. Note: That's both shocked AND dismayed.

Is it acceptable to put your sockpuppets up on the bulkhead after boarding the plane, or do you need to take them off first?

 

Are they clean and unsmelly or not?

 

Also is this flight over 4 hours?

Have you ever been to Fandango? IIRC, they coined the term/phrase. On their site you pick a "puppet" as your avatar.

 

I'm sorry, but I don't believe there are any sock puppets here at all -- and neither does my darling, handsome, intelligent, wonderful Dovster.
