The first step to tricking a fare is finding a good candidate fare - a low base fare, with a high YQ. I would also like to get some of the newbies used to looking for fares and identifying the YQ. I'll add a post to the Trick It! FAQ to show how I found this fare.

Let's minimize the discussion, just post "interesting" fares here.

So here's my first example... for those of you on the west coast who have been salivating over the Europe deals:

    CO: LAX-GVA, Mar-Apr $728 a/i, $360 YQ

NYC-CPH for March $34 each way base+tax $360 YQ. Was able to get YQ down by taking a jog from the L fort in the sunshine state to the island of paradise but not enough to make it worthwhile.

Is there any way to get a PM or email or phone call tutorial?? I understand a little (YQ) but a lot is Greek. A mini "do" in S. FL?

Hold the press!!! Just found "trick it FAQs". Am going to do some studying.

Funny, I independently found this fare today by mistake when trying to find a good (GOT-)CPH-NYC route to dump. That $34 base is quite something but only works NYC-CPH and not the other way. Bah!

I'm searching for a similar run (starting in PHX). Anyone having any luck scaling down the YQ? Tried many of the classics but not able to make a real dent.

DUB-LAX on the best in class airline is base 173 each way with 196.80 in YQ.

    $173.29

    TLPRIE
    $173.29

    YQ surcharge (YQ)
    $196.80

Would be nice to get rid of that YQ as was thinking of this a a mileage run candidate.

(incidentally I've gone to some limited effort to take out or obfuscate the precise details of the fare being discussed - is there any reason to do this or should I simply include the full fare breakdown including fare codes and identifying the carrier?)

There's probably no need to include the fare code. I guess we'll have to see what the group thinks about carrier. Personally, I would include the carrier, but people seem to be reluctant to do so.

Open jaw to avoid UK departure tax
Two carriers, one sweet and one salty
    Saves about $200

Thanks for the tip. I'm doing a number of searches now to see if I can figure out which airline you are referring to and how to construct an open jaw.

I'm trying to use LHR and LGW, but so far that doesn't seem to be working...it actually raises the price when i go into lhr and out of lgw or vice versa and i'm searching all airlines (well, all that are on ITA).

Looks like more creative research necessary...appreciate any further hints! :)

    I
I have made some good progress, and also moved a few steps backwards. Success: gotten the YQ from UA down by $100, to $180. So that's a savings of $112.

The bad news: A) I would love to dump it all, and B) I've tried many different airlines, and they add it all back in
    for example:
    AC YQ surcharge (YQ) $180.00

I tried AC, CO, LH, BD, and pretty much all of *A. Then, I tried to force it outside of *A, and it made the fare go up 300%.

I think I get the part of how an open jaw helps reduce the YQ, but the oil and vinegar, or salt and pepper, or sweet and salty...is where I'm struggling. I tried google, milepoint search, FT search...this is fascinating. I do feel like I'm learning a lot, but it's 1 step forward and 2 steps backward (in every case, my final AI price was higher than original.

Appreciate all the help I've gotten and will continue to look more...and of course appreciate any additional pointers of where to look.

I am looking at a UA fare from LAX to IST of $772 with a YQ of $240 in April. Any suggestions?

Let's move this discussion over to the Trick It thread and try to keep this thread for candidate fares / one line posts. No need to leave *A. Be sure and look at the fare construction in ITA to figure out what part of the price is going down.

Did you do search in ITA? Turkish Air starts $70 lower in April. The fares are P which credit 100% to UA, plus the fare rules allow combos with AA and DL, much more conducive to dump fuel when you have options. Let's continue the discussion in the TrickIt Thread.

It's a great fare but the dumping I got to work was on the Yellow airline from the land of beer which has a higher base fare so you only end up saving $30-$40...

Best in class is obvious enough, if people need a hint the fare code also points to that carrier if you are familiar with their codes. In general I am pleased I can follow the doublespeak here, for now.

Can we please make it slightly less transparent? In this case my request involves removing the fare codes etc. Lets not kill this completely buy openly publishing the details of our savings where they can easily be read by those we are saving from!

Oh, don't call the airlines while you're at it.
