I think this is kind of cool if you are a frequent traveler to EU: "socialism" at its absolute best :)

What is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?

A free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
    How does it work?

When you show your EHIC, you will receive treatment under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country.
Be aware that each country’s healthcare system is different. Services that cost you nothing at home might NOT be free in another country.

Are you implying that as a US-based traveler visiting the EU this is giving me any access to free medical care? I don't think that's the case.

As I understand it, you need a card (EHIC) issued by your European health insurance carrier. The app just provides information.

Actually, I had implied that without having read beyond where I had first seen it, which was in conjunction with an ad for an international scientific conference. I just thought it would apply to all the attendees. Nevertheless, I was still struck by how wonderfully "socialist" the whole concept is... Can you imagine such a thing being offered in the US? "Socialism"!

Not really no. In the US we would offer 20% off each mugging. They'll leave you enough to buy a meal at a Mickey D's in the hospital of your choice.
