Complete newbie here, so apologies for any mistakes. Just wonder if anybody could help me in the best way to do this. Have Amex 100k, Hsbc 185k and Chase 40k but note flights to London in June are a whopping $1600 coach.. ouch. Is there a better way to travel get upgrades etc.

    Thanks in advance.

Depending on the days you're looking to fly, there are NYC-LON fares as low as $1026 when searching via ITA Matrix Software.

The carriers have different policies as far as upgrading. Some require a more expensive fare plus copay/miles or certificates, others can be any fare plus copay/miles or certificates, and some carriers have options to buy an upgrade at OLCI.

    1. What kind of chase do you have? Depending on the type of chase card you have, you can transfer 30K ultimate reward points into United for one way. You can search united availability on their website.
    2. But a better alternative for you is to use Amex Membership reward points (assuming that is the Amex currency you report having) to transfer into singapore. Singapore partners w united. Singapore charges only 20k to europe on nonstop flights from the east coast USA. So it will be 40K roundtrip. You can call singapore: 213-404-0301 to check availability. It takes 2 days to transfer MR points from Amex into your singapore Krisflyer account. You will need to make a krisflyer account on their website. Here is singapore's award chart http://www.singaporeair.com/pdf/ppsclub_krisflyer/charts/SQMI_OneWayAwardCharts.pdf

United awards can be searched here, but just because you see availability on united's website does not mean those flights are available using Kris Flyer (singapore) miles. You will have to call singapore to confirm availability.

Don't know if yo have booked already, but be aware of the high fees added to many tickets when departing London. I think they are among the highest in the EU
