Travel and Golfing ?

Discussion in 'Beta Feedback [Archive]' started by tcswede, Feb 5, 2011.  |  Print Topic

  1. Would there be an interest to crate an overview of golf courses around the globe - I am surely not the only one travelling mostly with my clubs and trying to squeeze in 18 holes in various locations between meetings and trips.
It is often a tedious search to find what course is nereby when going to a new place - to get an idea of how to get to the course and wjat cost and how to book a teetime.
Idea would be to build a tread were by continent / country courses can be added.

    Please advice your thoughts

    Cheers

    Thomas

Grand idea! Any discussion around golf travel in a separate forum would be a great addition.

A Golf Porn thread where members could post a photo from a recent round would be a good read. I have a 365 days of golf book in my office so I can get a daily viewing to feed my addiction.

Great idea. I've been keeping a spreadsheet of courses in China and BKK.

If you ever get to Xiamen, check out http://www.golfxiamen.com/ its a group of mostly British ex-pats who organize golf outings in the area. They are very friendly and arrange some great deals.

Yep, I'd be interested in anything Golf/Travel related. Frugality has made me get cheap sets of clubs to leave in Florida and Washington. Always on the look out for bargain courses. Sure would be nice to know of recommendations to get a quick 9 in before a departure , something close to the airport with rental clubs available. Be happy to add to the collective knowledge. And open to any invitations.

I do the same thing. I drag an old set and leave it places I return to. I have one set at my brother's place and one with my in-laws.

All I travel with are shoes/balls/gloves.

I'm not a golfer, but why not start a thread in the General Discussion | Travel forum? If you wanted, you could post location-specific threads in other forums and use a main thread as a directory to point to those other threads.

I would think that there would be some interest in the forums for the different hotel brands.

I'd be willing to help manage a similar set of threads for snow skiers. I've previously maintained some posts for SPG properties at or near ski destinations worldwide.

At one time, I was motivated to keep one foot in the travel business. As such, I have a certificate in Golf Travel. (I'm a dork, too.) Happy to help with the evolution of golf discussion wherever possible.

I can provide some content, but I'd leave it to others to format.

In my mind, the top level would be country/region, then one would drill down to city/district and then to individual courses.

There should be an area for general comments about a region - IE, "in the UK, while most course are private, they are open for 'visitors' on certain days..."

I do not have the programming skill nor the time to take this on a Web-based entity, but if an appropriate space on MilePoint can be found for this, I see no reason that someone can't create and maintain threads on certain regions of the world or such. I have a file in storage containing numerous sets of notes on potential weekend trips that can be done in the US where one can fly in, play 36, eat well, and fly home on Monday morning.

Hey Mike, ?certificate in Golf Travel? what is this? Is it a sub-category of golf management? or travel management?

Travel management. It was a primer on how to change the way a travel agent books individuals and groups to cater to the needs of a golfer (always picking larger vehicles for rental, reminders on bag fees, etc.) and some basic marketing/branding for the agent looking to represent themselves as a subject matter expert. My family is in the travel business, and I've been lobbying to be that subject matter guy. It could be a fun side business, if I sit down and write up how I want to attack it. This I've not been particularly motivated to do recently given the global economy and my own never-ending to-do list.
