he actions of a train driver who made an announcement rebuking a noisy mobile phone user have been praised.

The driver used the public address system on a packed commuter train travelling between London and Milton Keynes to address the female passenger.

Peter Foot, chairman of the National Campaign for Courtesy (NCC), described the announcement as "marvellous".

Mr Foot said train passengers having loud conversations on mobiles was a "big bugbear".

I was on the Tube in London when the driver used the P.A. to say "Oh, lovely, sir, that will smell very nice. You do realize there are cameras everywhere and the police have been alerted?"

I am constantly amazed at the number of people who shout into telephones, whether mobile or not. I think that they do not trust technology. Heck, I even have to tell my wife that she is shouting into the phone, and have hung up on her when she starts doing it. Ticks her off but she will admit that I am right.

I've been on the London tube when similar announcements have been made, including once regarding people having sex on board. Don't be afraid of the London Tube though. I was on it a lot late at night during the Paralympics...and it didn't feel any less safe than the NY Metro.

Saw an old movie once where there was a scene where the mother was on a long-distance call using an ancient wall-mounted candlestick phone. Her daughter had to tell her, "Mother! You don't have to get there on sheer lung power alone!"

What was the announcement? Suggestions for better technique? Requests for specific acts?

It never occurred to me to be afraid of the Tube. I take subways all over the world.

That is where the convergence of the Tube and Youtube will occur.

Good thing they announce that. Those people can be difficult to find. ;)
