Tourists: Occupancy Tax in Florence

  1. As if traveling isn’t expensive enough, Rome has created a room tax for tourists who stay in Rome. So if you stay in a campsite or a bed and breakfast it will cost you an extra euro each night. People who stay at one- to three-star hotels will cost you an additional two euros per night. And whoever stays in four- and five star hotels will cost you an extra three euros each night. So the real question is: will Florence be next with an accommodation tax?
Mayor Renzi has been considering an occupancy tax these days. It is a thought that has been suggested since 2003 in the city council. The idea is taking on a lot negativity from hotels and local businesses who fear this tax can take a hold on tourism in Florence. On the other hand, people for this tax believe that it will keep the city clean, improve tourism services, fund cultural events and activities.
As things unfold, I will keep you updated on this tax.
