Tsukiji market, the largest wholesale fish market in the world and one of the highlights of any visit to Japan, is closing its doors. The market has outgrown its space and the surrounding land is too valuable to expand locally. So the market will be moving in 2014.

I'm not particularly happy about sharing this story, though it did give me the excuse to go back through my pictures from 2 and 3 years ago and relive those trips a bit. And I'm looking forward to my next visit in April 2013, even if it is something of a farewell.

I guess that might be a good enough reason for another trip to Tokyo next year, since I didn't find the opportunity to visit the market the last time around.

That is such a shame. We went to the market in September and it was fantastic. Lots of good sushi and other food items in a great atmosphere full of history.

    HUGE mistake.

I've been on two of my three trips. The only reason I missed it on the 3rd is because I was there for the Dreamliner on day 3 of service and I was so exhausted the next day I couldn't drag myself out of bed. And I was saddened by that miss.

It is awesome. The tuna auction part is much more complicated now, with very limited access and controlled time access. And it was awesome to see but I can comfortably say that if the extra hour of sleep and access via the metro rather than a taxi is in the cards for you it is still worth making the trip. It really is an incredible experience.

You have my condolences. We're looking at an early fall trip, I think. Her available dates in the Spring don't work and summer is too hot.

Its interesting just to see the big fish, and other seafood even if you don't eat it raw.

That argument would work if those big fish were swimming in a tank, such as the Osaka aquarium (whale sharks!). But dead fish at 5 in the morning? Not a big draw last I asked.

If an aquarium was open at five in the morning, I'd go. That sounds rather peaceful...

We're heading to Japan at the end of June and this is a must do on my list. I'm going to Japan with my wife and son (who will be under 1.5) so I think this visit will have to be solo as long as I can sneak away for a bit.
Another must do for me is getting to a Japanese League baseball game!

While you are there, don't forget to visit Daiwa Sushi or Sushi Dai in the outer market area!

Why not Sushi Zanmai too? It's "cheaper" but it's still decent. They are open 24-hours (or at least one outpost is), which might be a turn-off to some. That aspect worked great for my midnight bike rides.

I have not seen any updates on the scheduled closing/moving of the market. It is still open in the Tsukiji location.

Are there non raw fish options at the market or at Daiwa or Dai? My wife is pregnant and can not eat raw fish/sushi.

Made it to the auction and got one of the coveted 120 spots. Showed up at around 4:20 am and was around the 65th person there (so I get the second group). Can't wait to see the auction, then indulge in some sushi for breakfast! (Wife decided to stay in bed at the hotel)

Lucky you! Last year I missed out on the auction. I showed up (what I thought was) extra early and after wandering around a bit, found the ticket booth at 4:15 AM. By this time the tickets were long gone! Would love to see some pics if you post them.
