Once again three US Senators embarass themselves and the institution with worthless letters and toothless legislation that will instruct AirlinesforAmericaUSDepartment of Transportation to “look at fees” to make sure they are “justified” This while Congress prepares to bless the cartels wire fraud of price scamming that makes it impossible to meaningfully shop for the low fares that passengers are almosf always seeking. Four things here:
1 Five years ago, the evidence was already in that mergers were the most gargantuan consumer ripoff in US history-every day since then air cartel schemes to rip off and defraud America have left an evidence pile that can be seen from outer space.
2 The fees are not justified, of course. But the jumbo jet in the room is that it was mergers that were never justified and that must be undone if we are ever to cleanse our third-world corrupted aviation system. Near $100 billion in extorted profits in sham fees and fixed/colluded profits.
    3. This transparently phony “lawmaking” and letter writing bloviation makes our big money owned and operated Congress look even more worhless and corrupt than the roar of silence both parties have sounded as air travel’s gone deeper in the toilet every day. Your “hearing” with airline execs was one of the lowest points in the history of Congress and surely must be a training video for lonbyists. The vacuous, sham, pointless questions and hot air noise which produced nothing proved what a banana republic we’ve become.
    4. Let the record be clear: in terms of substance, On a 1 to 10 scale of substantive protection Congress actually gets worse than a zero, having done not a thing of substance to curb BIGAIR incredibly it may soon sully itself further by blessing its criminal wire fraud/scheme to defraud pricing.

While I agree with your point that Congress' abdication of its responsibility to provide effective consumer protections in the airline industry is disgusting and cowardly -- and possibly even corrupt -- I'm not sure rants on InsideFlyer are the best way to try to get a change.

Here's a thought: There's an election coming up in less than two months, with every Representative and one-third of the Senators up for election ("hiring"). If in your research you happen to come across data on how much "campaign contributions" from the airline industry or the airlines themselves go to the various Congresscritters, and publicize that information and the state (and party) of each recipient, that might shame the guilty and give us voters something "actionable" to work with. We could then take action we feel appropriate, whether a letter to the recipient expressing our opinion of their service or even just voting against the malefactor.

If you discover a particularly egregious case, you might even start a campaign and get some outside publicity for your cause.

Actually think Inside Flyer is pretty influential and that hearts are hardening against the cartel. The owners of Congress are not the airlines directly, but Wall Street capital management and private equity companies and those who “bundle” hundreds of thousands for members of Congress who after all spent hundreds of intense hours a year shaking people down for big contributions that the lady in 27B simply cannot match. Big money flows to both parties thus the obscene performance of Mrs Clinton giving 25 minute quarter of a million dollar speeches in the MIDST of an election. And the exodus of Congressmember dem and rep who become lobbyists and fixers against the people who made them entities in the first place. The unions are also playing an understandable but still unforgiveable game of ‘I got mine’ and should brace themselves for giant job losses the very first second the cartel can offload them. An honest media would detail the hundreds of thousands of jobs lost through mergers, the destruction of good airport jobs and the shifting of work to wage slaves 10k miles away at useless call centers.

In other words, you want to be in Rahm's "Paradise" surrounded by folks telling you how righteous Serena is for stealing your money and being a total jerk to some 20 year old kid who kicked her ass, or you want to be in the Big Skankokie hanging with the Socialist of the month club.... it's all there for you.

A happy elite? Why be "elite" at all? They've instituted policies at EVERY step of the way to try to tell you they don't want your money.

Oh and for those who wish to follow Counsellor's sane advice and seek a political solution, I offer the following ......

Where can you live and fly everywhere in the WORLD for the lowest price possible from your choice of 3 airports ? ------ NEW YORK

Where can you live and be subject to a connection, and the draconian often passive aggressive policies of a Bully who doesn't think they're THAT bad---

    ATLANTA

Vote accordingly and if you can't figure which goes with which, I'm not qualified to help.

    SANCTUARY..... SANCTUARY

Life's too short to worry about giving your money to people who don't want it anyway.
