Based in SFO, and looking to earn 5000+ miles on LH M&M to Europe (or S. America) over the Labor day weekend. Ideally returning to US on Sep 4 or 5.

Alternatively, flying over any weekend in Sep/Oct. Any suggestions? Flights in coach, fares do not need to be upgradeable. Could fly as far east as Russia or Kazhakstan (in fact, would love to travel to the former USSR).

Any suggestions welcome, I'm not finding very good fares at the moment).

Be careful: Russia (and I would assume most/all of the FSU) requires a visa which is an expensive hassle. There have been discussions about when one needs a visa for transit in Moscow, but even if you're right you risk having the airline refuse to let you board as well as having a big mess if the flight out of Russia is cancelled.

Have you thought about taking the European portion to SMD3 to Munich? This leaves on the Monday of Labor Day weekend and returns on Wednesday, with one hotel night at MUC. It's expensive for a MR but could be fun if it works for you.
