A smartphone app, which allows US passengers to have food delivered to their gate, has racked up 15,000 downloads in its first 12 months.

The B4 YOU BOARD app is in operation at JFK International Airport, Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport, and Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

Airport restaurateur, HMS Host, which pioneered the app, said the average passenger spend per transaction was $10.

A spokesman for Chicago O’Hare, which introduced the app in November last year, said: “HMSHost’s free B4 YOU BOARD app has been very popular with O’Hare travellers who love the convenience and the great food they can order and get delivered right to their gates.

“The app’s usage is steadily increasing as travellers learn more about this quick, easy way to get world-class food delivered to them.”

The app is set to be rolled out to more airports across the US later this year.

Earlier this month, F&B operator OTG announced it was to deploy thousands of new iPads to three major North American airports over the next 18 months – allowing passengers to order food at the gates as well as send last minute social media updates before boarding their plane.

OTG will send more than 2,000 of the devices to LaGuardia Airport, another 2,500 to Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport and a further 2,500 to Toronto Pearson International Airport.

I am one of the 15,000, and I can attest that "No of downloads" is a useless stat.

Anyone actually tried this thing out? Is there a service fee for using this? And can you try to time it so you order at security and you get to your gate just before delivery? And how do they find you? Yell out, "Order for Mr. Billy Bob Jones!"?
